Latinx Virtual Center
Cultural
The Latinx Cultural Center is providing you with a Virtual Center! You can check in to see what your Latinos In Action council is up to, find resources for your online classes, ask about opportunities during this difficult time, and allow us to stay home together with you. If you would like to be included, please let us know, and tell all of your Aggie friends! The video chats "La Hora de la Sopa" will be open every week on Wednesdays from 11 am to 2 pm until August 07th via WebEx, This will allow you to check-in and out on your own time, just like the physical center! We are planning on continuing the virtual center as long as we need to until we are able to meet in the physical center once more and are all able to meet again on campus.
Stronger than Steel? The Wonderful World of Spider Silk
Lecture/Readings | Agriculture and Natural Resources
Flexible, lightweight, strong, biocompatible, and water-resistant. A material with all of these properties can mean life-changing medical devices, protective equipment, and even building materials. But who came up with this super product? Spiders!
Can you imagine trying to farm spiders that eat each other and yield relatively small quantities of silk? This is where spider silk expert, Justin Jones, comes in. Join us for a lecture and discussion with this USU researcher and professor to learn about how his lab creates synthetic spider silk through the use of transgenic goats, bacteria, alfalfa, and even silkworms!
Dr. Justin A. Jones is an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at Utah State University. Dr. Jones received his Ph.D. degree in biology from Utah State University in 2015. He has worked with spider silk and its recombinant forms since 1998 while attending the University of Wyoming.

The Gender Wage Gap: Digging Deep into Understanding The Complexity
Panel Discussion/Presentation
The Utah Women & Leadership Project at Utah State University invites you to join us for our first Women’s Leadership Forum of the academic year. It is a panel discussion focused on understanding the wage gap issues in Utah. The gender wage gap is a persistent concern in the United States, where women make about 82% of what men make for comparable work. And the numbers in Utah are more extreme, where a woman earns approximately 71 cents for each dollar a man earns. In fact, year after year, Utah is consistently near the bottom of national rankings in terms of gender pay equity. Although the existence of the wage gap is indisputable, many try to discount it or attribute the entire gap to “women’s choices.”
In reality, the wage gap is deeply complicated, with dozens of contributing factors, including educational attainment, recruiting practices, negotiation success, hours worked, occupational segregation, and unpaid care work, not to mention unconscious bias and plain-old sexism. Our panel of experts will discuss some of the most important contributing factors, dig deeper into how the gap varies by race and other demographics, and evaluate major efforts to reduce the wage gap.
