The USU Eastern Library & Learning Commons will be hosting a traveling exhibit “Bringing War Home” August 10ththru September 30th. The exhibit features object stories of veterans and military families.
In addition to this exhibit will be a companion exhibit “Paint the Desert: Memory, Identity, and Commemoration on the T-Walls of the Global War on Terror” by A.J. Arriola.
Both exhibits will be available for viewing during LLC open hours: Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm. Beginning August 31, the LLC will be open Monday thru Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm and Sundays 4pm-9pm.
The LLC would also like to extend an invitation for visitors to view the Carbon College WWII Memorial Roll, LLC room 108, that was dedicated in April 1946 in honor of the Carbon College students comprising of high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores who lost their lives in the war.

Tau Beta Pi Bent Monument Unveiling Ceremony
Ceremony/Awards/Celebration
Join us for the unveiling and dedication of the restored Tau Beta Pi Bent at Utah State University. This monument is dedicated to astronaut and Utah State alumna Mary L. Cleave and serves as a way to recognize her accomplishments and the inspiration she continues to provide to students and the engineering community. The ceremony will include a few short remarks about Mary L. Cleave, the history of the Tau Beta Pi Bent, and the restoration process, followed by the official unveiling of the monument. There will also be time afterward for pictures and to celebrate the completion of the project. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other members of the USU engineering community are invited to RSVP at the link given.

Weekly Vintage Swing Dancing

Come join the USUSA Big Band Swing Dance Club as we have a casual atmoshpere teaching and participating in vintage swing dance styles popular largely from the 1920s through the 1950s and beyond! No partner or experience required, though anyone is welcome to join! Instruction often is approximately the first 30 minutes, followed by opportunities for dancing, socializing, and asking questions!

The Roots of Sexual Violence in Utah: What Every Utahn Should Know

As Utahns, we pride ourselves on strong families, close‑knit communities, and deep moral commitment — yet our state continues to report higher‑than‑national‑average rates of rape, child sexual abuse, and other forms of gender‑based harm. A recently released report written by Dr. Susan R. Madsen notes, “sexual violence in Utah is not an anomaly… it is a patterned, predictable outcome of cultural norms, social systems, and power structures that shape how people understand gender, authority, and worth.” This webinar brings that reality into the light. Dr. Susan R. Madsen will be joined by Dr. Julie Valentine, one of Utah’s leading researchers on sexual assault and forensic nursing, as well as Liliana Olvera‑Arbon, the executive director of the Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault. In addition, executive directors from direct serve providers throughout the state will also be invited to share their insights about the report and make recommendations on next steps.

Keith Gido is University Distinguished Professor in the Division of Biology at Kansas State University. His research career is centered on the conservation and ecology of freshwater fish communities.
His work spans the interplay between fishes and ecosystem function, top-down versus bottom-up dynamics in aquatic systems, the impacts of introduced species, and long-term patterns in fish assemblage structure and population dynamics across prairie streams and Southwestern rivers. He has mentored numerous graduate students and undergraduates, and works collaboratively with many federal, state, tribal and private researchers.

USU Libraries is excited to announce a return to Logan Tabernacle for the annual Arrington Lecture. Associate Professor of History Benjamin E. Park from Sam Houston State University will present, "Declarations of Interdependence Why the Latter-day Saints Just Can't Quit the United States." Dr. Park is an award-winning historian with a commitment to public scholarship. He is the current president of the Mormon History Association, author or editor of five books including, "Kingdom of Nauvoo: The Rise and Fall of a Religious Empire on the American Frontier" which won the Mormon History Association's Best Book Award, and "American Zion: A New History of Mormonism" which won the American Society of Church History's Philip Schaff Prize for the Best Book in the History of Christianity.

Featuring three works by Bunch and culminating in Dvorák’s exuberant E-flat Major String Quintet, this is a celebration of an instrument that may not always demand center stage—but, as it turns out, burns longer.

Join us in celebrating the winners of the 2026 Evans Biography Awards. This year, we are proud to honor John G. Turner, author of "Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet," and Margaret A. Brucia, author of "The Key to Everything: May Swenson, A Writer's Life." The event begins with a reception and a light continental breakfast, followed by the official awards presentation. Both authors will discuss their winning books, answer questions, and conclude the event with a book signing and opportunity to visit.

Utah Agricultural Products BBQ
Special Event
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Ag Day BBQ! The barbecue will feature Utah-grown beef, dairy products, pork, onion rings, salad, lamb, corn, apples, Creamies, and more. A collaboration between participating commodity groups, companies, and QANR, volunteers from commodity groups and the college prepare and serve the meal in an outdoor festival atmosphere where guests can try all sorts of delicious food. The event has become a beloved fall tradition at USU for the agricultural community, alumni, donors and friends. All proceeds, including your donation, go to the Utah Agricultural Leadership Endowment at USU to help train future generations of Utah’s farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness people through scholarship support.
Legacy of Val Day of Service: UCC Urban Community Farm Clean-Up
Student Activities
The Utah Conservation Corps Urban Community Farm grows produce for local pantries, including the SNAC pantry while also providing planting education, water-wise practices, and demonstrating native flora and fauna. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the farm for the winter season. Volunteers will help with general property maintenance, preparing planting beds, weeding, and more. Master of Healthcare Administration Information Session

Do you want to pursue management and leadership positions in healthcare? The #3-ranked Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program at the University of Minnesota has a long tradition of developing students and producing nationally recognized health care leaders. Brandon McBride, the CEO of Logan Regional Hospital, Huntsman graduate, and an MHA program graduate from the University of Minnesota, will also be there to talk about his experience and answer questions. The USU Eastern Library & Learning Commons will be hosting a traveling exhibit “Bringing War Home” August 10ththru September 30th. The exhibit features object stories of veterans and military families.
In addition to this exhibit will be a companion exhibit “Paint the Desert: Memory, Identity, and Commemoration on the T-Walls of the Global War on Terror” by A.J. Arriola.
Both exhibits will be available for viewing during LLC open hours: Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm. Beginning August 31, the LLC will be open Monday thru Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-5pm and Sundays 4pm-9pm.

LAEP Speaker Series: Joe Diaz, Which Career Path in Landscape Architecture Will You Take?

2026 Distinguished Alum Lecture Review of different career paths that are available for landscape architects; including experiences in working for a non-profit, private sector firms, and a large public sector agency. A discussion of challenges, successes, and opportunities for growth in all areas. Joe Diaz Jr. is a licensed landscape architect that has worked both in the private and public sector throughout his career. His primary focus has been on working with communities and developing spaces that encourage community connections, safe durable spaces, and maintaining the integrity of the surrounding environment. Early in his career, Joe contributed to a wide range of residential and public projects while working with PDSA and James Dalton and Associates. His work spanned multiple states, including California, Texas, South Carolina, Illinois, Nevada, Colorado, and Arizona. These developments integrated thoughtfully designed entry monuments, community parks, gathering spaces, fountains, lakes, and pedestrian connectivity. During this period, he also collaborated on many government park projects around the country further solidifying his commitment to public-facing design.

Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.
Beginner-friendly, no previous dance experience needed, and no Spanish required. Make sure to fill out the form at the link below.

Clinical Supervisor Training

Utah State University’s Department of Social Work offers this 8-hour, synchronous training for licensed mental health professionals who provide, or plan to provide, clinical supervision. The training is designed to meet Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requirements for clinical supervisor training under R156-60e-306.1.
Developed and taught by experienced clinical social work educators and practitioners, the course combines required content with practical tools supervisors can use in their day-to-day work.
Participants can attend the training on Oct 3rd from 9am-6pm OR Nov 2 and Nov 9 from 1-5pm.

Mindful Listening Training

The Mindful Listening Program is a 6-week synchronous online training that helps you learn how to listen more deeply and apply mindfulness to improve social relationships. Starting on Oct 7th and ending on Nov 18th, we will meet every Wednesday at 4 pm (Mountain Time) for one hour to go on a regenerative learning journey together to develop mindful listening. Mindful Listening is an approach to being present with others and building healthier relationships in general, both professionally and personally, by cultivating an open mind. Rob Salguero-Gómez is Professor of Ecology at the University of Oxford, where he studies how populations of organisms across the Tree of Life respond to environmental change.
His research integrates demographic modelling, life-history theory, resilience science, and emerging technologies such as AI, robotics, and remote sensing to understand ecological dynamics under disturbance and climate change.
He leads several international open-science initiatives, including the COMPADRE and COMADRE demographic databases, and works broadly on ecological resilience, ageing, biodiversity forecasting, and conservation in a rapidly changing world.

The Mindful Listening Program is a 6-week synchronous online training that helps you learn how to listen more deeply and apply mindfulness to improve social relationships. Starting on Oct 7th and ending on Nov 18th, we will meet every Wednesday at 4 pm (Mountain Time) for one hour to go on a regenerative learning journey together to develop mindful listening. Mindful Listening is an approach to being present with others and building healthier relationships in general, both professionally and personally, by cultivating an open mind. The ultimate goal behind this training is to improve the capacity for human connection. The purpose of this training is train mindfulness in the context of social interactions. Listening with deep presence is one of the foundational aspects for developing the skillset of applied mindfulness in the arena of relationships and communication. Dr. Mark Damen from the Classics Program of the Department of History, Cultures, and Ideas will present a talk titled "Ancient Epic, Homer and Vergil" at the Logan Library as part of the Society for Classical Studies "Odyssey Day." This nationwide event celebrates Homer's Odyssey and the excitement driven by Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of the work. Dr. Damen will discuss how ancient epics were created and transmitted so that we can continue to read them today, nearly 3,000 years after their original composition.

Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.

51st Annual Honors Last Lecture

Dr. Benjamin Burger, 2026 Honors Outstanding Professor from the Department of Water, Earth, and Environmental Sciences in the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources, will deliver the 51st Annual Honors Last Lecture, “Beyond Extinction: The Prehistoric Past and Surviving the Future.” The lecture itself will explore stories about how we can use the fossil and rock record to understand both the fragility of life during times of dramatic change and the remarkable resilience of ecosystems through Earth’s history and talk about what it means for our shared future. Initiated in 1976, the Honors Last Lecture has become an important tradition for the Utah State University community. Each year, a committee of Honors students selects one Honors Outstanding Professor, whom they invite to deliver an imagined "Last Lecture," a talk that shares wisdom and insight with students and community members as if it were the professor's final chance to lecture at USU. A reception will follow in the lobby of the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall. The livestream for a statewide audience and the recording of the event after its completion can be accessed from the Honors Program website.

In 1854, John Snow, MD, used geographic analysis and maps to determine the primary source of the cholera epidemic in London. Public health spatial analysis was born. Much more recently, organizations across government, utilities, and private industry have discovered the positive impact of adopting a GIS-based location intelligence strategy using spatial analysis and maps to communicate potential outcomes. This session will offer some historical insight into early GIS in Utah and describe the current diversity of location intelligence applications through case studies. Examples represent stakeholder engagement, climate and environmental issues, transportation, and development challenges and will reference outcomes representing a strategy for balanced interaction between humans and the natural environment.

"Alice in Wonderland" — An Evening of Opera Scenes by Student Composers

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this concert features a collection of brand-new opera scenes written by student composers at Utah State University. From a tumble Down the Rabbit Hole to encounters with the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Tea Party, and the Queen of Hearts, each composer brings their own musical voice to the strange and whimsical world of Wonderland. Larry Smith Jazz Kicks Big Band

The Utah State University Music Department features The Legendary Larry Smith “Kicks Band” as it presents its Fall Concert playing the music of Sammy Nestico. This concert will present a full program focusing on the arrangements and original tunes of Sammy Nestico. Sammy Nestico has written and arranged over 300 selections and best known for known for his compositions and arrangements with the Count Basie Orchestra. From 1970 to 1984 he recorded ten original albums and won four Grammy Awards. His music will leave the audience with a great love of the big bands while focusing on rich melodies and familiar tunes in the various styles of swing, Latin, and funk. Some of the tunes performed that evening will include Wind Machine, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Fascinating Rhythm, Tangerine, Sweet Georgia Brown, I’m Beginning to See the Light, The Joy of Cookin’, and A Warm Breeze.
The Kicks Band features guest vocalist Terresa Shreve singing tunes such as That Ol’ Devil Moon and Tangerine, in the vocal stylings of Anita O’Day. Soloists for the evening will include Nik Clark, Danny Hankins, Kelin Gibbons, Greg Wheeler, Jared Saunders, Roger Karen, Brian Baird, and others. This Nesitco focus will include music everyone can enjoy. The concert will be held in the Russell/ Wanlass Performance Hall on the USU campus Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. Please join us for this legendary performance of big band music in this special setting.

The Mindful Listening Program is a 6-week synchronous online training that helps you learn how to listen more deeply and apply mindfulness to improve social relationships. Starting on Oct 7th and ending on Nov 18th, we will meet every Wednesday at 4 pm (Mountain Time) for one hour to go on a regenerative learning journey together to develop mindful listening. Mindful Listening is an approach to being present with others and building healthier relationships in general, both professionally and personally, by cultivating an open mind. The ultimate goal behind this training is to improve the capacity for human connection. The purpose of this training is train mindfulness in the context of social interactions. Listening with deep presence is one of the foundational aspects for developing the skillset of applied mindfulness in the arena of relationships and communication. Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.

Clinical Supervisor Training (November training day 1 of 2)

Utah State University’s Department of Social Work offers this 8-hour, synchronous training for licensed mental health professionals who provide, or plan to provide, clinical supervision. The training is designed to meet Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requirements for clinical supervisor training under R156-60e-306.1.
Developed and taught by experienced clinical social work educators and practitioners, the course combines required content with practical tools supervisors can use in their day-to-day work.
Participants can attend the training on Oct 3rd from 9am-6pm OR Nov 2 and Nov 9 from 1-5pm.

Wassermann Piano Series presents Youl Sun - Bachauer Gold Medalist

Youl Sun came to international prominence with a remarkable triple victory at the 2024 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, earning the Gold Medal, Audience Choice Prize, and Student Jury Prize. Known for his exceptional technique, musicality, and artistic maturity, he continues to build an international career with performances in Europe, Asia, and the United States. His recent accomplishments include First Prize at the 2024 Seoul International Music Competition, Second Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2023 Viseu International Piano Competition in Portugal, and top prizes at the Isang Yun International Music Competition, the Istanbul Orchestra'Sion International Piano Competition, and the Maria Canals International Music Competition. Earlier honors include First Prize and the Polonaise Prize at the Asia-Pacific International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. A graduate of the Korea National University of Arts, where he was admitted as an artistic prodigy, Youl continued his studies in France at the Schola Cantorum de Paris and is currently enrolled at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, studying with Olivier Gardon. Breaking the Cycle: ACEs, Trauma, and Utah’s Path to Healthier Children
Panel Discussion/Presentation
A research‑based conversation with Utah leaders/experts on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the impact of trauma, and new initiatives. Utah is taking a historic step to confront childhood trauma and its lifelong impact. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are linked to 9 of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S., and ACE data show that 65.7% of Utah adults have experienced at least one ACE, while 1 in 4 have experienced three or more. These early adversities shape mental health, physical health, educational outcomes, and long‑term economic stability. Childhood trauma — particularly sexual abuse — is far more common than many realize and often goes unnoticed or unaddressed. We’ll be joined by three leading experts — Dr. R. Neal Davis, Holly Willard, and Dr. Brooks Keeshin — who will explore the science, clinical realities, and community impact of ACEs and childhood trauma. After their discussion, Sage Hancock, Executive Director of GenerationAll, will close the webinar by introducing Utah’s Healing Generations initiative, the first statewide ACE screening pilot of its kind.

LAEP Speaker Series: Alonzo Coby, When Land Leads: Indigenous Planning for Community Futures
Lecture/Readings
This lecture explores applied approaches to Indigenous planning through real-world examples in place-making, cultural landscape interpretation, land justice, stewardship, and planning policy. The session highlights how Indigenous planning frameworks move beyond conventional land-use models to center ancestral relationships to land, language, ceremony, and systems of community governance. Rather than treating planning as a purely technical exercise, this work positions it as a vehicle for cultural continuity, self-determination, and nation-building.
Alonzo Coby serves as Planning Director for the Shoshone Bannock Tribes, where he advances sovereignty-centered planning grounded in cultural identity, land stewardship, and long-term community well-being. His work demonstrates how tribal planning functions not merely as a regulatory framework, but as a powerful instrument for nation-building, self-determination, and the protection of ancestral relationships to land, language, and ceremony.

MUSES

The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. We're so excited to get this started!
Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.
Beginner-friendly, no previous dance experience needed, and no Spanish required. Make sure to fill out the form at the link below.

Dr. Ashley D'Antonio is an Associate Professor, Gene D. Knudson Forestry Chair, and Associate Department Head in the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University. Her field of research is recreation ecology, which focuses on understanding disturbance related to outdoor recreation in parks and protected areas.
She primarily use interdisciplinary and spatial approaches to understand visitor behaviors, use patterns, and related disturbances across spatial and temporal scales. Recent projects have focused on understanding and managing visitor use in Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Rocky Mountain National Parks, as well as state-managed lands in Oregon and California.

The Mindful Listening Program is a 6-week synchronous online training that helps you learn how to listen more deeply and apply mindfulness to improve social relationships. Starting on Oct 7th and ending on Nov 18th, we will meet every Wednesday at 4 pm (Mountain Time) for one hour to go on a regenerative learning journey together to develop mindful listening. Dr. Scott Wing studies fossil plants and climate change during the last part of the Age of Dinosaurs and the first part of the Age of Mammals at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. He is particularly interested in the evolutionary radiation and ecological expansion of flowering plants, and in the globally warm climate of this time.
One of his main interests is an event called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), which provides the closest analog in earth history to the Anthropocene, the current epoch of human-induced global warming and global ecological change.

Odyssey Book Club Meeting #3

With the popularity of Christopher Nolan's film adaption, Homer's Odyssey has gained new popularity and controversy. This book club will bring together faculty, staff, students, and acommunity members to read the original work and discuss its many themes and meanings. At the end of the semester, we will then hold a screening of the film to discuss the ways in which Homer's story continues to live and be adapted for new audiences.

LAEP Speaker Series: Huaqing Wang, Landscape Research and Design for Human Health
Lecture/Readings
This lecture introduces Huaqing Wang’s recent research on how built environments influence human health, and discusses how these insights translate into landscape and urban design studio teaching. The talk highlights ecological thinking and evidence-based design as bridges between research and pedagogy.
Huaqing Wang is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University, affiliated with the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Center and the Berryman Institute. She is also a licensed landscape architect and an AICP member. Her research integrates landscape ecology, human health, and data-driven methods to examine how urban green spaces influence health and equity, with work published in leading journals and featured in outlets such as Forbes and Medical News Today.

Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.
Beginner-friendly, no previous dance experience needed, and no Spanish required. Make sure to fill out the form at the link below.

Wassermann Piano Series presents Kit Armstrong

“Here is a pianist who seems to be on his way to lofty heights.” (Alfred Brendel) At the age of 9, Armstrong became a full-time undergraduate student at Utah State University studying biology, physics, mathematics as well as piano with Irving Wassermann (2001–2002).
Described by the New York Times as a “brilliant pianist” who combines “musical maturity and youthful daring in his exceptional playing”, Kit Armstrong performs as a soloist with some of the world’s most famous orchestras while maintaining an active career as a recitalist and composer. Armstrong’s piano recordings include the albums Bach, Ligeti, Armstrong (2013) and Liszt: Symphonic Scenes (2016) on Sony Classical, a double CD dedicated to a panorama of works by William Byrd and John Bull: The Visionaries of Piano Music (2021) on Deutsche Grammophon, and Mozart’s violin sonatas with Renaud Capuçon (2023).

A research‑based conversation on how Utah’s cultural norms shape women’s lives, body image, and power—and how we can create change. Utah women and girls are exposed to the same media, influencers, and cultural messages as women across the nation — yet the pressures they experience around beauty, body image, modesty, marriage, and gender expectations often feel uniquely intense. Why? What is it about Utah’s cultural, social, and religious environment that magnifies these dynamics? And how do these norms shape women’s lives, opportunities, relationships, and sense of self?
