Hansen Life Sciences Retreat

USU students, faculty and staff of all disciplines, involved in the study of biological processes at the molecular level, are invited to the 2021 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat Friday, Oct. 8, from 4:30-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 9, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Riverwoods Conference Center, 615 Riverwood Parkway, Logan, Utah. Playful Explorations Related to Dynamical Systems

How would you approximate the square root of some random positive number? Start by guessing!

We will develop an algorithm, perhaps the exact one the Babylonians are credited for, and then explore iterative maps, Newton’s method, fixed points and an existence theorem.

This presentation is based on the first chapter of Dynamical Systems by Shlomo Sternberg (2010, Dover).
