We're so excited to get this started!
Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.
Beginner-friendly, no previous dance experience needed, and no Spanish required. Make sure to fill out the form at the link below.

Admired and sought-after for both its fresh interpretations of the classical music canon and its championing of works by twentieth- and twenty-first-century composers, the ensemble has been hailed for its “edge-of-the-seat performances,” by the Boston Globe, which called it “simply the best.”
The BSQ has collaborated with some of this generation’s most important composers, including John Cage, György Ligeti and Leon Kirchner, and has performed on major concert stages across the globe, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and Wigmore Hall.

Clinical Supervisor Training (November training day 1 of 2)

Utah State University’s Department of Social Work offers this 8-hour, synchronous training for licensed mental health professionals who provide, or plan to provide, clinical supervision. The training is designed to meet Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requirements for clinical supervisor training under R156-60e-306.1.
Developed and taught by experienced clinical social work educators and practitioners, the course combines required content with practical tools supervisors can use in their day-to-day work.
Participants can attend the training on Oct 3rd from 9am-6pm OR Nov 2 and Nov 9 from 1-5pm.

Youl Sun came to international prominence with a remarkable triple victory at the 2024 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, earning the Gold Medal, Audience Choice Prize, and Student Jury Prize. Known for his exceptional technique, musicality, and artistic maturity, he continues to build an international career with performances in Europe, Asia, and the United States. His recent accomplishments include First Prize at the 2024 Seoul International Music Competition, Second Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2023 Viseu International Piano Competition in Portugal, and top prizes at the Isang Yun International Music Competition, the Istanbul Orchestra'Sion International Piano Competition, and the Maria Canals International Music Competition. Earlier honors include First Prize and the Polonaise Prize at the Asia-Pacific International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. A graduate of the Korea National University of Arts, where he was admitted as an artistic prodigy, Youl continued his studies in France at the Schola Cantorum de Paris and is currently enrolled at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, studying with Olivier Gardon. Mindful Listening Training

The Mindful Listening Program is a 6-week synchronous online training that helps you learn how to listen more deeply and apply mindfulness to improve social relationships. Starting on Oct 7th and ending on Nov 18th, we will meet every Wednesday at 4 pm (Mountain Time) for one hour to go on a regenerative learning journey together to develop mindful listening. Mindful Listening is an approach to being present with others and building healthier relationships in general, both professionally and personally, by cultivating an open mind. The ultimate goal behind this training is to improve the capacity for human connection. The purpose of this training is train mindfulness in the context of social interactions. Listening with deep presence is one of the foundational aspects for developing the skillset of applied mindfulness in the arena of relationships and communication. By consistently exercising the skill of mindful listening, you improve the quality with which you connect with others.

Breaking the Cycle: ACEs, Trauma, and Utah’s Path to Healthier Children
Panel Discussion/Presentation
A research‑based conversation with Utah leaders/experts on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the impact of trauma, and new initiatives. Utah is taking a historic step to confront childhood trauma and its lifelong impact. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are linked to 9 of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S., and ACE data show that 65.7% of Utah adults have experienced at least one ACE, while 1 in 4 have experienced three or more. These early adversities shape mental health, physical health, educational outcomes, and long‑term economic stability. Childhood trauma — particularly sexual abuse — is far more common than many realize and often goes unnoticed or unaddressed. We’ll be joined by three leading experts — Dr. R. Neal Davis, Holly Willard, and Dr. Brooks Keeshin — who will explore the science, clinical realities, and community impact of ACEs and childhood trauma. After their discussion, Sage Hancock, Executive Director of GenerationAll, will close the webinar by introducing Utah’s Healing Generations initiative, the first statewide ACE screening pilot of its kind.

Communitas Lecture Series: Zora Murff and Rana Young

Zora J Murff is an artist, educator, and Assistant Professor of Art and Black Studies in the School of Art + Design at the University of Oregon. He received his MFA in studio art from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a BS in psychology from Iowa State University. Drawing from his background as a social worker for youth on court probation, Murff’s photography unearths hidden histories and offers visual investigations of Black life, often addressing the violent paradoxes created by imperial paradigms. His bold, straightforward visual language encourages viewers to reflect on the power that visual culture holds over understandings of race, class, and societal hierarchies.
Rana Young is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art in the School of Art + Design at the University of Oregon. She earned her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a BFA in Studio Art from Portland State University. Through her practice, Young employs photography to construct autobiographical narratives set within the Midwest landscape. Her projects utilize staged scenes, archival images, and documentary techniques to confront and articulate the complex dynamics of familial bonds, hereditary trauma, childhood abandonment, and mental illness.

LAEP Speaker Series: Alonzo Coby, When Land Leads: Indigenous Planning for Community Futures
Lecture/Readings
This lecture explores applied approaches to Indigenous planning through real-world examples in place-making, cultural landscape interpretation, land justice, stewardship, and planning policy. The session highlights how Indigenous planning frameworks move beyond conventional land-use models to center ancestral relationships to land, language, ceremony, and systems of community governance. Rather than treating planning as a purely technical exercise, this work positions it as a vehicle for cultural continuity, self-determination, and nation-building.
Alonzo Coby serves as Planning Director for the Shoshone Bannock Tribes, where he advances sovereignty-centered planning grounded in cultural identity, land stewardship, and long-term community well-being. His work demonstrates how tribal planning functions not merely as a regulatory framework, but as a powerful instrument for nation-building, self-determination, and the protection of ancestral relationships to land, language, and ceremony.

Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.
Beginner-friendly, no previous dance experience needed, and no Spanish required. Make sure to fill out the form at the link below.

All are invited to Public Viewing Night at the USU Observatory on Friday, Nov. 6, from 7-9 p.m. Admission is free, and all are welcome. The USU Observatory is located on the roof of the Science Engineering Research (SER) Building on the USU Logan campus. To reach the observatory, enter the first floor of the SER building and go to the freight elevator at that floor's northwest corner.
Note: The observatory telescope is accessible only by stairs from the roof deck.

Legacy of Val Day of Service: Fall Planting at Wuda Ogwa

Join us as we honor the legacy of Val R Christensen and support the Northwestern Band of Shoshone in their efforts to restore the ecosystem at Wuda Ogwa (located outside of Preston, ID). We will be planting native plants throughout the property formerly known as the Bear River Massacre Site. Utah State University’s Department of Social Work offers this 8-hour, synchronous training for licensed mental health professionals who provide, or plan to provide, clinical supervision. The training is designed to meet Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requirements for clinical supervisor training under R156-60e-306.1.
Developed and taught by experienced clinical social work educators and practitioners, the course combines required content with practical tools supervisors can use in their day-to-day work.

The Mindful Listening Program is a 6-week synchronous online training that helps you learn how to listen more deeply and apply mindfulness to improve social relationships. Starting on Oct 7th and ending on Nov 18th, we will meet every Wednesday at 4 pm (Mountain Time) for one hour to go on a regenerative learning journey together to develop mindful listening. Mindful Listening is an approach to being present with others and building healthier relationships in general, both professionally and personally, by cultivating an open mind. The ultimate goal behind this training is to improve the capacity for human connection. The purpose of this training is train mindfulness in the context of social interactions. Dr. Ashley D'Antonio is an Associate Professor, Gene D. Knudson Forestry Chair, and Associate Department Head in the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University. Her field of research is recreation ecology, which focuses on understanding disturbance related to outdoor recreation in parks and protected areas.
She primarily use interdisciplinary and spatial approaches to understand visitor behaviors, use patterns, and related disturbances across spatial and temporal scales. Recent projects have focused on understanding and managing visitor use in Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Rocky Mountain National Parks, as well as state-managed lands in Oregon and California.

Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.

One of his main interests is an event called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), which provides the closest analog in earth history to the Anthropocene, the current epoch of human-induced global warming and global ecological change.

LAEP Speaker Series: Huaqing Wang, Landscape Research and Design for Human Health
Lecture/Readings
This lecture introduces Huaqing Wang’s recent research on how built environments influence human health, and discusses how these insights translate into landscape and urban design studio teaching. The talk highlights ecological thinking and evidence-based design as bridges between research and pedagogy.
Huaqing Wang is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University, affiliated with the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Center and the Berryman Institute. She is also a licensed landscape architect and an AICP member. Her research integrates landscape ecology, human health, and data-driven methods to examine how urban green spaces influence health and equity, with work published in leading journals and featured in outlets such as Forbes and Medical News Today.

DANZA FOLKLÓRICA WORKSHOP
We're so excited to get this started!
Join the USU Spanish Club for our beginner-friendly Danza Folklórica Workshop! Throughout the semester, we’ll explore traditional folkloric dances from South America in a fun and welcoming environment.
6:30-7:30 PM - Caporales. We'll keep the first hour focused on Caporales so we can build technique, learn choreography, and improve throughout the semester.
7:30-8:30 PM - Rotating Dances. The second hour will rotate through other dances from the interest survey based on group interest, including Marinera, Festejo, Valicha, Diablada Puneña, and more.
Beginner-friendly, no previous dance experience needed, and no Spanish required. Make sure to fill out the form at the link below.
USU Observatory Public Viewing Night
Special Event
All are invited to Public Viewing Night at the USU Observatory on Friday, December 4, 2026, from 7-9 p.m. Admission is free, and all are welcome. The USU Observatory is located on the roof of the Science Engineering Research (SER) Building on the USU Logan campus.
To reach the observatory, enter the first floor of the SER building and go to the freight elevator at that floor's northwest corner.
Note: The observatory telescope is accessible only by stairs from the roof deck.

Wassermann Piano Series presents Kit Armstrong

“Here is a pianist who seems to be on his way to lofty heights.” (Alfred Brendel) At the age of 9, Armstrong became a full-time undergraduate student at Utah State University studying biology, physics, mathematics as well as piano with Irving Wassermann (2001–2002).
Described by the New York Times as a “brilliant pianist” who combines “musical maturity and youthful daring in his exceptional playing”, Kit Armstrong performs as a soloist with some of the world’s most famous orchestras while maintaining an active career as a recitalist and composer. Armstrong’s piano recordings include the albums Bach, Ligeti, Armstrong (2013) and Liszt: Symphonic Scenes (2016) on Sony Classical, a double CD dedicated to a panorama of works by William Byrd and John Bull: The Visionaries of Piano Music (2021) on Deutsche Grammophon, and Mozart’s violin sonatas with Renaud Capuçon (2023).

Join us in celebrating the remarkable talents and hard-earned skills of Utah State University’s music therapy seniors as they take the stage for their annual Senior Gala concert. This event will showcase the student's musicality, professionalism, and flexibility as they perform 1-2 pieces from a repertoire of 60 songs memorized for their fourth-level Clinical Qualifying Exam. Adding to the excitement, the concert program is unknown to the students in advance—performers and audience members discover each piece together in the moment. The Senior Gala promises to be an inspiring evening that celebrates these seniors' achievements as they move toward becoming qualified, compassionate music therapists.

Founded in 2009, the GRAMMY® Award-winning Akropolis Reed Quintet is “a sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity” (BBC Music Magazine). Comprising five reed players and entrepreneurs unbounded by limits or categorization, Akropolis has graced the Classical Billboard Charts with each of their last three albums, including #2 in April, 2024, and has won seven national chamber music prizes including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal. Having premiered and commissioned more than 200 works by living artists and composers, they are pioneers and champions of a new genre of classical music—the reed quintet.

What can you program after late Beethoven?
The FSQ continues its journey toward a complete cycle of Beethoven’s late string quartets in fall 2028 with Op. 127—a work of extraordinary spaciousness, intimacy, and invention. And then: Enescu. Written when the composer was only nineteen, his monumental String Octet seems to ask how much farther eight string players can possibly go. Sweeping, youthful, virtuosic, and almost orchestral in scale, it is one of the rare works audacious enough to follow late Beethoven.

It is an annual event featuring workshops, speakers, and industry representatives. Past workshops have included topics in robotics, AI research, microcontrollers, and hands-on activities. Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped at USU, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Arts and Sciences. Admission is free. Larry Smith Jazz Kicks Big Band

The Utah State University Music Department features The Legendary Larry Smith “Kicks Band” as it presents its Spring Concert playing the music of Buddy Rich. The program will focus on the music of the great American drummer, songwriter, conductor, and band leader Buddy Rich. He is considered one of the most influential drummers fo all time. With this focus the Kicks Band will focus on some of the great recordings of the Buddy Rich Big Band. Tunes such as Time Check, Wind Machine, Big Swing Face, Nutville, Dancing Men, Cape Veridan Blues, Groove Merchant, You Rotten Kid, and Love For Sale, provide a sample of the great big band music for the evening. Special feature for the evening will be the drum stylings of Mr. Danny Hankins as he provides the “Buddy Rich drumming essence” for this evening of big band jazz. Other soloists will include Nik Clark, Danny Hankins, Kelin Gibbons, Greg Wheeler, Jared Saunders, Roger Karen, Brian Baird, and others. The Kicks Band will also feature the beautiful vocal stylings of guest vocalist Terresa Shreve. The concert will be held in the Russell/ Wanlass Performance Hall on the USU campus Tuesday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. Please join us for this legendary performance of big band music in this special setting.

The FSQ@USU season closes with three works that reach toward memory, home, loss, and what endures.
Brittany J. Green’s Lead Me Home, for strings and electronics, draws upon Thomas Dorsey’s hymn “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” allowing fragments of familiar material to emerge through shimmering strings and ethereal electronic sound. Aakash Mittal’s Living Memory, written for the Fry Street Quartet in response to the creatures and habitats of the Sundarbans, returns in a newly expanded version incorporating film, heard here for the first time.
At the center of Beethoven’s Op. 132 lies one of the most profound movements in the quartet repertoire: his Heiliger Dankgesang—a “Holy Song of Thanksgiving” written after recovering from serious illness. Across centuries and vastly different sound worlds, these three works listen backward and forward at once, asking what we carry, what we lose, and what might extend beyond us.

Cache Symphony Orchestra Concert

The Cache Symphony Orchestra, a community ensemble that brings together musicians from across Cache Valley and students from Utah State University, presents its annual Youth Concerto Competition Winners Concert. This special performance will feature three outstanding young soloists selected through the orchestra’s annual competition, alongside orchestral works by Brahms, Shostakovich, and more.
The concert celebrates both the next generation of talented musicians and the rich tradition of symphonic music.

Seven years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. Wind Orchestra

Concerts are part of the band large ensemble curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. All concerts are associated with one or more of the band ensembles: MUSC 4700 Wind Orchestra, MUSC 3795 Wind Symphony, MUSC 3790 Symphonic Band, MUSC 3785 Marching Band

USU Bass Festival

The USU Bass Festival is an annual event that provides bassists a chance to work with performers and educators from around the world and is open to bassists of any age and experience level. Festival activities include masterclasses, technique workshops, guest artist performances, and the opportunity to perform in a bass choir. Pre-registration is required to participate in the all-day event.
Faculty Senate
Meeting
The Utah State University Faculty Senate is a central component of shared governance, represents the faculty in educational policy matters, including admissions, curricula, and degree requirements, while also considering faculty welfare and other issues of professional interest. It comprises elected faculty members, appointed administrators, and student officers, with broad authority to review policies, propose changes, and engage with the University's leadership on matters of importance. Faculty Senate meetings are public meetings and open to anyone interested in attending. A zoom link is available upon request. Presented by USU's studio ensembles — Flute Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Cache Horn Choir, and Low Brass Choir. This concert provides the audience an opportunity to experience the unique sonorities of homogenous small ensembles across a diverse and entertaining program.

The American Festival Chorus & Orchestra concludes its 19th season with a celebration of favorite choral classics from its first nineteen years and the world premiere of a major new four-movement work by Mack Wilberg for chorus, orchestra, children’s choir, and handbells. Commissioned to honor the final season of founder and Music Director Dr. Craig Jessop, this landmark work celebrates AFCO’s enduring artistic legacy throughout Cache Valley and the Intermountain West.

We are excited to honor our class of 2027 graduates! The Commencement ceremony will include the traditional walk from the University Quad to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum where there will be the awarding of honorary degrees, Commencement speeches, and the conferring of degrees upon all graduates. 5:30 p.m. Assemble – All graduating students and faculty will assemble on the University Quad 6:00 p.m. Academic Procession – University Quad to Dee Glen Smith Spectrum 7:00 p.m. 140th Commencement Ceremony – Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Individual college convocations will take place on Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7.
