Critical Race Theory and Education: What Is Going On Here? (DMIT Sparkshop)

Workshop/Training

Critical Race Theory started in legal studies back in the 1980s, but has recently made media headlines as a point of controversy. Republican-lead states have launched a full on attack of CRT, completely banning it from being discussed or taught in K-12 schools. Back in May, Utah Governor Spencer Cox asserted that "critical race theory should not be taught in Utah elementary, middle and high schools, but asserted the now controversial, yet difficult-to-define theory does belong in colleges and universities (KSL News)." This Sparkshop will define CRT, talk about its place in education, and help clarify misunderstandings surrounding the theory.

Re-Launching the Career Design Center

Workshop/Training

Over the past year, the Career Design Center, formerly Career Services, has been very busy reimagining and redesigning career education at Utah State University. Based on national trends, research, data, feedback from the Utah State University (USU) community, and the workforce, changes were made to scale the Career Design Center's ability to reach all USU students. Career education is all of our responsibility - the future of the Career Design Center is to be a presence that is strategically integrated into the student academic experience, not just a brick-and-mortar location. Our goal is to collaborate with more and more faculty so we can more intentionally help students be a learner, but also prepare for their careers and successfully transition into the workforce. Helping students gain experience through opportunities such as internships gives students a stronger advantage in the job market upon graduation. The Career Design Center can provide more strategic career education to help students navigate the ever-changing workforce needs.
