Jazz Jam Session with Ryan Nielsen

Arts/Entertainment

In our continuing series of jazz jam sessions, this edition will feature a special guest artist: trumpeter Ryan Nielsen. Praised for the "breathtaking singing quality of his sound, tremendous instrumental skill, and outstanding creativity," by jazz icon John McNeil, Ryan Nielsen's artistry grows out of a love of groove, spirit, and beautiful melody. He has deep roots in both classical and jazz music, a vulnerable devotion to discovering his personal artistic voice, and a penchant for thrilling musical risk taking. A USU student ensemble, the Caine Jazz Combo, will lead off the evening as usual, followed by a tune or two featuring Ryan Nielsen. As part of the effort to engage students with jazz, students will then be encouraged to perform a jazz standard of their choice with Ryan Nielsen. Join us for a casual, unscripted evening of jazz standards with USU students and talented trumpeter Ryan Nielsen.

Big Bands

Arts/Entertainment

The USU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Greg Wheeler, will perform four selections based on four completely different style of jazz. Bob Mintzer's rock-shuffle selection entitled "Mr. Funkâ" will open the show. Thereafter the band will lay back with a memorable Nestico/Basie based tune by Jim Martin entitled "The Count Is In." A powerful arrangement of Mambo Inn provides terrific jazz dissonance throughout this arrangement by Michael Mossman featuring many of the band members. The Jazz Ensemble will close the set with a classic from Super Mario 64 entitled "Bob-Omb Battlefield."

The USU Jazz Orchestra will close out the show with four selections of their own, including Bob Mintzer's tribute to the gateway through which so many immigrants came to America, Ellis Island. Michael Brecker's funky and soulful "Renaissance Man" follows, arranged by our very own jazz piano professor, Ryan Conger. Don Dimick's very Basie-esque "Tone Poem" will feature the trumpet stylings of Nik Clark, and to close, the entire saxophone feature steps out on the Maynard Ferguson Bebop Nouveau Band classic, "Cruisin' for a Bluesin."
