About This Degree
The DVM curriculum aims to train thriving mixed animal veterinarians with professional, foundational, and applied skills to serve urban and rural communities in Utah and beyond.
Students will prepare to be day-one ready veterinarians. The curriculum aligns with the proficiencies defined by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges.
Graduates with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree have a wide range of employment opportunities in private practice as well as agricultural, research and public health applications. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, projected occupational job growth is at 19 percent for veterinarians, much faster than the average of 4 percent for all other occupations, between 2023-2033.
What You Will Learn
Our curriculum prioritizes hands-on clinical training and the development of clinical reasoning, ensuring that graduates can confidently perform essential tasks such as disease diagnosis, prevention and management, basic surgeries, and emergency care. Our program will emphasize the development of strong clinical competencies through case-based learning, simulations, and real-world clinical experiences.
In addition to technical skills, the DVM curriculum is focused on the development of professional skills and well-being. We have introduced modules on communication, ethical and professional judgement, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, mental health resilience, practice management, and financial decision-making to ensure our graduates are not only skilled clinicians but also well-rounded, compassionate caregivers.
In the 4th year, the Semi-Distributed Veterinary Teaching Program provides an immersive, hands-on clinical education. This innovative program partners with carefully selected Affiliate Veterinary Instructional Partners (AVIPs) to offer diverse, real-world training across a broad spectrum of veterinary practices.
