Role Summary

The Ag Operation Manager – Research position is responsible for managing and coordinating the operation of a research field laboratory dedicated to fruit and horticultural research projects. This role involves direct collaboration with university research faculty and oversight of both researchers and employees working at the facility. The incumbent also collaborates with the Ag Operation Manager, assists in general farm operations, and must be available to work flexible hours during peak agricultural periods such as spring preparation, planting, and harvest seasons. This role acts as a communication link between farm operations and administrative entities, ensuring research projects and activities meet standards. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate records, managing resources, and leading a team to achieve research field laboratory goals. 

Responsibilities & Essential Duties

  • Prepare and maintain land for research plots at the field laboratory.
  • Assist in implementing and supporting research programs.
  • Set up and monitor irrigation and spraying systems.
  • Control weeds and maintain the overall appearance of the research plots.
  • Operate, maintain, and supervise use of farm equipment.
  • Develop and follow a maintenance schedule; maintain accurate equipment records.
  • Train employees on equipment operation and safety protocols.
  • Support researchers by providing training to graduate students and temporary employees.
  • Enforce farm safety procedures and ensure research compliance standards are met.
  • Oversee proper storage and handling of agricultural and research products.
  • Supervise harvesting activities and coordinate produce marketing.
  • Identify potential markets, negotiate transactions, and coordinate with packing facilities.
  • Maintain and report accurate land use and associated records.
  • Ensure project records and compliance documentation are complete and current.
  • Ensure adherence to university, state, and federal agricultural research regulations.

Accountability

  • Reports directly to the Department Head or Director.
  • Responsible for operational, safety, and compliance performance of the research field laboratory.
  • Collaborates with the Ag Operation Manager to align farm operations with research projects.

Authority

  • Supervises research employees and student workers.
  • Makes recommendations regarding agricultural and research practices.
  • Provides input on hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Supports researchers in executing field-based research initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of agricultural research compliance and safety regulations.
  • Strong understanding of research logistics and experimental design needs.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
  • Familiarity with sustainable farming practices and horticultural techniques.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to manage, delegate, and supervise a team effectively.
  • Solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Adaptability to respond to weather changes, equipment issues, or operational demands.
  • Proficiency in maintaining and operating modern agricultural equipment.
  • Working knowledge of pesticide application regulations and licensure requirements.
  • Ability to ship and receive materials and products, flexibility for evenings and weekends.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of relevant agricultural production experience with demonstrable equipment operation skills; or a minimum of 9 years of directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
    • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Licensing & Certifications:
    • Valid Utah Driver’s License.
    • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 60 days of employment.
    • Pesticide applicator certification preferred.
  • Schedule Requirements:
    • Must be available for evening and weekend work as needed, particularly during peak farming seasons.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using tablets, smartphones, and GPS-based agricultural systems.
  • Background in marketing agricultural products and negotiating sales contracts.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work conducted both indoors in controlled environments and outdoors in agricultural settings.
  • Exposure to a variety of weather conditions, soil types, and agricultural chemicals.
  • Requires the ability to perform fieldwork and lift up to 75 lbs.
