Summary

The Physical Security Tech Journeyman performs intermediate-level installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of physical security systems. This role supports security operations by ensuring the proper functioning of access controls, intrusion, and panic systems, research freezer monitoring, and automated security systems across all USU locations. The Technician Journeyman works under moderate supervision and may assist in training junior technicians.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Physical Security Tech Journeyman is distinguished from the Apprentice position in that it requires less supervision and is expected to possess the knowledge and experience to perform more complex tasks.  

Typical Functions

1. Install and maintain access control, surveillance, and alarm systems.
2. Diagnoses and repairs common technical issues.
3. Assists in training and guiding Technician I employees.
4. Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
5. Maintains service records and documentation.
6. Coordinate with other departments to ensure system integration.
7. Follows established safety protocols and security policies.
8. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of physical security system installation and maintenance.
• Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Familiarity with technical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, plus four years of experience in physical security system installation and maintenance.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires moderate physical activity, including the handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Employees are exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
