UN Human Rights Council

Geneva, Switzerland

Description

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year. It meets at the UN Office at Geneva.

This opportunity is provided by the Global Educational Opportunity Program. Since 2003 the GEO Program has provided an unusual opportunity for selected university students to be individually guided and exposed to the annual summertime meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland in June 2020. In addition, students may be involved in the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women in NYC in March 2021.

Students benefit from this experience by better understanding how the international community develops a plan of action, and how UN bodies operate at the international, regional, and local levels. This GEO-monitored exposure allows participants to integrate their personal areas of interest into the realities of international relations and learn how this experience can be applied to different fields of study. If approved by the sponsoring university, students may obtain academic credit from their UN exposure.

Duration: June 12 - July 3

Flights and lodging are the responsibility of the student. However, scholarships are available.
