USU has partnered with Global Mamas to offer internships for all majors in Cape Coast, Ghana for Spring and Summer 2019. Founded in 2003, Global Mamas is a social enterprise that is commited to sustainable growth and job creation in the local community. Global Mamas works with mothers, wives, grandmothers, sisters, and talented entrepreneurs to produce and sale handcrafted products using traditional techniques that maintain local artisinal skills, such as batiking, bead-making, and Shea butter production. Fair Trade practices ensure that every Global Mama is paid a steady, living wage. The women are further empowered to take part in organizational decisions and product development. Through Global Mama's network of international volunteers and interns, the Mamas receive personalized, hands-on training to refine their skills and strengthen their capacity to produce better products, manage their growing businesses, personal incomes, and lives in general.
