Biography

Jay is delighted to be returning to Lyric Rep this summer to direct Paul Slade Smith’s hilarious The Outsider. Two years ago, Jay had a fabulous time leading One Man Two Guvnors, and he’s looking forward to this piece just as much.

Jay is the producing Artistic Director of the Madeline Park Shakespeare Festival as well as a professor of theatre at the University of Texas at El Paso. For the Shakespeare Festival, Jay has directed bilingual versions of As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Taming of the Shrew, and Romeo and Juliet.

Regionally, Jay has directed for Woodinville Rep in Seattle, The Monomoy Theatre on Cape Cod, and Chester Theatre Company in Western Massachusetts.

As a UTEP professor, Jay is the co-adapter and creator of UTEP’s acclaimed bilingual A Christmas Carol en la Frontera. Jay also created UTEP’s Halloween productions of Shakespeare’s Asylum and Bloody Shakespeare! and the site-specific outdoor production of Lysistrata. Other UTEP productions include Metamorphoses, Grease, Medea, Sister Act, and Sara Ruhl’s In The Next Room. Jay is also the writer and director of the irreverent Covid comedy, Keeping Distance.

As an actor Jay has worked on film, television and on stage around the country, including numerous appearances at Salt Lake’s own Pioneer Theatre. For more, check out www.jay-stratton.com
