This is not to say that ivory held no value in the ancient Near East. It certainly did, to judge from the fact it's a commodity regularly traded. But its worth appears to be directly related to its use in art, not any inherent value as ivory is today. Thus, it's rarely seen in ancient Mesopotamian artwork without added ornamentation of some sort.
