Course Description

Tell is the Arabic word for "hill," seen in many Near Eastern city names, such as Tel Aviv ("Spring Hill"). Ancient city sites appear as mounds today not only because human occupation naturally gravitates to higher locations where there's improved visibility and capacity for defense—think of all the modern cities with names like "Brooklyn Heights"—but also because settlement entails the accumulation of debris which over the course of ages slowly raises a city's ground level.
