- 0) Stat 250 Curriculum Summer 1998.
(5/18/98)
- 1) As some of you have noticed, there is
no lecture on Wednesday May 27.
We will only meet twice next week - on Tuesday May 26 and
Thursday May 28. The quiz (originally scheduled for May 27)
will be given on May 28 instead. I have to find a
more spacious room and let you know about it. (5/20/98)
- 2) Homework 1. (5/20/98)
- 3) For those of you that missed the class on May 21,
I scanned in my personal notes. Please go to
notes
to look at the notes. The inidividual files are labeled
page19.gif through page25.gif. (5/21/98)
- 4) Homework 2. (5/27/98)
-
5) Quiz 2 will be given on Wednesday 6/3/98 in Enterprise
176. It starts at 11.45am. Be there in time.
(6/2/98)
- 6) Homework 3. (6/3/98)
- 7) For those of you that missed the class on June 4,
I scanned in my personal notes. Please go to
notes
to look at the notes. The inidividual files are labeled
page36.gif through page41.gif. An additional example
that explains the ``Theorem of Total Probability''
in some more detail comes directly from the lecture transparencies
and is stored as image page39a.gif. (6/4/98)
- 8) Quiz 3 will be given on Wednesday 6/10/98 in Enterprise
176. It starts at 11.45am. Be there in time.
(6/9/98)
- 9) Homework 4. (6/10/98)
- 10) Quiz 3 has been graded. You can pick your
quiz outside my office (the Holodeck - room 142 in
S&T II). The building is open 24 hours all weekend.
So step by whenever it is most convenient for you.
Of course, if you don't want to come out over the
weekend, the quiz will be returned in class on Monday.
(6/12/98)
- 11) The individual point distribution
is available now. The first column contains the last 4 digits of
your SSN. Please check the numbers and let me know
if something is incorrect. An approximative
grade distribution is also available.
At this point, I would say that 250 or more points are an A,
220 to 250 points a B, 190 to 220 points a C, 160 to 190 a D,
and below 160 probably an F. Hopefully this helps to decide how much
you want to study and work on the extra credit assignment over
the weekend.
(6/12/98)
- 12) Chapter 7 Extra Credit Questions. (6/15/98)
- 13) Important dates and times:
The early final will take place
in ENT 176 (our usual place) this
TUESDAY 6/16/98 between 2.15pm and 4.15pm.
The final will take place in ENT 176 this
THURSDAY 6/18/98 between 11.45am and 1.45pm.
If you are still interested in a demo of our VR/Statistical Graphics
Lab, the demo will take place this Wednesday between 11.45am and
12.45pm (approximately). No regular class on Wednesday. Please come
over to room 142 in S&T II for the demo.
If you didn't make it into the Monday help session but still have
questions, see me in the Holodeck on Tuesday 6/16/98 at 11.00am.
(6/15/98)
- 14) Finally done with grading! All grades are on their way
into the computer now. First thing - the final: Some people did
very well. Congratulations, Bill. Best final with 131 points.
Also congratulations to Colleen (128) and John (126) for an
outstanding semester. No need to say these are all A's.
Also several other strong performances. Unfortunately, on the
lower range we had scores of 44.5, 48, and 49.5. When just grading
the final, I would call this an F. Go to
final
to look at the solutions. The inidividual files are labeled
final01.gif through final11.gif. My personal grade sheet is
available at
final/finscores.gif.
Unfortunately, my question 3
scepticism was justified :-( Three people got all summary
statictics (Q 1.1) correctly (Bill, John, Judith), two persons
could sum up (Q 1.2) correctly (Bill, Colleen), Ramsay was the
only one with the MAD (Q 1.3). Also only one person (Sarah)
with the formally correct answer to Q 2.7. Overall two people
that got the scatterplots (Q5) entirely correct (Colleen, Jennifer Mc.).
Unfortunately still 5 people that got three or less points
from parts 4.2 and 4.3 from the regression question. This was
exactly the same question as in Quiz 2. Check yourself!
- 15) Grades: The following cutoffs have been set. I started with my
preliminary grades after 3 quizzes and 3 homeworks. That was
A for > 250, B for 220-250, C for 190-220, D for 160-190, and
F for < 160. For HW 4, I added 35 for an A, 34 for a B, 33 for a C,
and 32 for a D. When just looking at the final, I would call
> 110 an A, 90-110 a B, 70-90 a C, 50-70 a D, and < 50 an F.
This sums up to > 395 an A, 344-395 a B, 293-344 a C,
242-293 a D, and < 242 an F. This would result in 5 As,
11 Bs, 10 Cs, 7 Ds, and 1 F.
- 16) Fortunately for many of you, we got extra credits. And there,
many people demonstrated that they really wanted and deserved a
better grade than what they would have obtained without this option.
Adding extra credit to your regular score and using the same
cutoff values as above results in 11 As, 9 Bs, 11 Cs, 3 Ds,
and 0 Fs. As promised, there is no sharp cut among two people.
In the current situation, the best person with a B would have
needed 6 more points for an A, the best person with a C 8.5 more
points for a B, and the best person with a D 11 more points for a C.
I must say I'm really sorry I had to assign three Ds. If you are wondering
why you got a D, ask yourself why you didn't spend any
more time on the homeworks. There is really no excuse for losing
30, 40, or even more points in homework assignments -
especially if you get points for just doing the work! Add these points
to your score and you will see that you comfortably could have
reached a C.
- 17) As I said I was really pleased with the extra credit part.
Someone did all 5 possible assignments and two people came
up with the WWW answer. Based on your final or extra credit work,
I would like to answer some particular questions or make some comments,
but unfortunately I don't have all the e-mail addresses.
Alisa, Bill, Colleen, Stefanie
when you check this page, can you send me a note how
to reach you by e-mail. If so, you'll hear from me by e-mail
in about three weeks after my trip to Europe.
Overall, seeing this additional extra credit work
together with the in-class performance, I think the following
individual grades at
pointsfin.web
are well justified. Contact me in case of any questions.
- 18) I'm looking forward to see your comment sheets in three weeks.
I'll create some summary statistics and put the results here
on this page in about three or four weeks. I hope some of you
might be interested as much as I am to see what other people in this
class thought about Stat 250.
Good luck to all of you. I really enjoyed teaching this class!
