As outlined in Policy 1001, the USU Campus Community is invited to participate in the policy development process by providing feedback during a public comment period.
Best Practices for Contributing Effective Public Comments
After reading the policy, consider the following:
- Consider how the proposed policy will impact you and/or your department, unit, college etc.
- Provide constructive and information-rich or data-informed comments.
- The comment period is not an official vote. The intent is to strengthen and enhance the proposal, resulting in a more robust policy.
- Include alternative solutions or examples.
- Keep your comments concise.
- If a policy section is unclear or confusing, seek clarification from the Policy Custodian or provide details about why.
- Consider if the policy articulates which individuals have authority to carry out the actions of the policy.
- Remember, a policy is an authoritative statement that establishes values or a philosophy or delegates authority to individuals to coordinate key functions of the
university. A policy focuses on the ‘why’ while procedures and guidance focus on the ‘how’.
