He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Isadore M. Singer, following earlier degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Bonn. His research lies at the intersection of algebraic geometry and mathematical physics, with a focus on K3 and Calabi–Yau varieties, modular forms, and string dualities. He has authored over 35 peer-reviewed publications, including nine with undergraduate and graduate student coauthors, and has held visiting appointments at institutions such as the Isaac Newton Institute at Cambridge University (UK), the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics at Brown University, and the Fields Institute (Canada). His research has been supported by the Simons Foundation, the National Security Agency, and several institutional fellowships.

At Utah State University, Professor Malmendier is a dedicated and award-winning teacher whose instructional and mentoring contribution spans the full undergraduate and graduate curriculum. He has received multiple teaching and mentoring honors, including Mathematics Teacher of the Year (2024, 2025), Mathematics Undergraduate Research Advisor of the Year (2018, 2019), USU Distinguished Capstone Mentoring Award (2018), College of Science Undergraduate Advirsor of the Year (2020), and College of Arts and Sciences Teacher of the Year (2026). He has taught high-enrollment gateway courses as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate classes. His mentoring has resulted in numerous student publications, competitive national awards (including Goldwater Scholarships, NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, and NSA Summer Internships), and successful placement of students into doctoral programs and academic positions.
