USU Research Professor Elected to National Wastewater Recycling Association

Utah State University engineering professor Judy Sims was recently elected to the board of directors for the National On-Site Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA). Sims is a researcher at USU’s Utah Water Research Laboratory.

NOWRA is the largest on-site wastewater organization in the United States with more than 4,000 members. The organization strives to advance and grow the on-site and decentralized wastewater industry by promoting sustainable wastewater management on a watershed basis. It provides a leadership role in state and federal legislative initiatives to protect water quality and public health, as well as to provide education and training programs to professionals in the water quality industry, to policy officials, the public and system owners.

Sims has been involved in the field for more than 30 years. She has several state- and nationally-funded projects concerning implementation of on-site management programs at the local level. She is also investigating the effectiveness of treatment of septic tanks effluent in deep trenches, a type of treatment and disposal system commonly used in parts of the Intermountain West.

As a member of the board of directors, Sims serves on the education committee and editorial board and will participate on committees that promote the educational activities of NOWRA.
