Amanda Nielson Named USU Athlete of the Week For Second Straight Week

LOGAN, Utah — For the second week in a row, volleyball player Amanda Nielson has been named the Utah State University Athlete of the Week. The award is voted on by state media panel.
Nielson, a junior from West Valley City, Utah, was named to the Fremont Loans & Investment all-tournament team as she led Utah State to a second-place finish with a win against Cal State Northridge and a loss to Oregon on Saturday [Sept. 2].
Against the Matadors, Nielson recorded 12 kills, eight blocks, and four digs, to go along with a career-high five service aces. For the week, Nielson averaged 2.57 kills, 1.43 blocks, 1.29 digs, and 0.71 service aces per game.
The week before Nielson led USU's effort and was named to the Hilton Albuquerque Classic all-tournament team. Against UC Riverside she recorded a career-high 20 kills.
This season Nielson leads the team with 3.60 kills per game. Her 16 total blocks are tied for second.
The Aggies, 3-2 this season, host Weber State Tuesday night [Sept 5] in the first home match of the season. The Aggies will then play in a tournament hosted by Utah Sept. 8-9.
NOMINEES FROM OTHER SPORTS INCLUDED:
Men's Cross Country — Vance Twitchell... Finished second individually in a dual race with Weber State on Saturday [Sept. 2]. He covered the 3.75-mile course in 18:07.14. USU lost to Weber State 22-34 in its season-opening race.
Women's Cross Country — Amy Egan... Placed third individually in a dual race with Weber State on Saturday [Sept. 2]. She covered the 2.75 mile course in 18:51.30. USU lost to the Wildcats 18-43 in the first race for both teams.
Football — Antonio Taylor... Scored USU's only touchdown on a spectacular 45-yard interception return. It marked the first interception return for a score by an Aggie since 2004 and was Taylor's third career pickoff. Taylor also added seven tackles, including six solo stops as well as a pass broken up.
Soccer — Shannon Ross... Had four shots, three on goal, including two off free kicks that the Washington State goalkeeper had to dive to save, in Utah State's 1-0 loss to Washington State Sunday [Sept. 3] in the Utah Fall Classic. USU also lost 3-0 to #17 Arizona in the tournament.
