Bang! Thwack! Plop!

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University presents a new exhibit from the permanent collection entitled “Bang! Thwack! Plop! Comics: An Influence on Contemporary Art.”

The opening reception for the exhibit is Monday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the reception where a Halloween costume contest will also be held.

“You can come dressed up as your favorite superhero or villain and the best costumes will receive a prize,” said Deb Banerjee, the curator of exhibitions and programs for the museum.

On display in the art museum’s upstairs gallery, the exhibition explores the intersection of comics and art and how comic books and comic strips have influenced contemporary art in different ways.

“The exploding popularity of comics through animation, graphic novels and movies shows us that comic impulse is becoming a more popular means of artistic or commercial communication,” said Banerjee.

Featuring more than 20 new art acquisitions never displayed in the museum before, the exhibition presents new artwork addressing themes of identity, cultures in conflict, society’s ills, the media and even theme parks.
