Bethany Neilson Named Director at Utah Water Research Laboratory

The Utah Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University has appointed Bethany Neilson as its new director.

A proud USU alumna, Neilson brings more than two decades of experience in water research, environmental system analysis and mentoring the next generation of engineers. Her appointment will take effect on July 1.

Widely respected as a champion of water resources engineering and water data science, Neilson has made a lasting impact in her field. Since 2008, she has held a dual appointment as a researcher at the Utah Water Research Laboratory and as a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. She also currently serves as the head of the department’s Water Division and as director of the Logan River Observatory.

"With over two decades of experience at USU and the Water Lab, Dr. Neilson is well-equipped to lead the lab forward,” said David Jones, dean of the College of Engineering. “Her clear vision and deep understanding of Western water challenges will ensure the lab continues to drive innovative, science-based solutions for water and environmental issues.”

Neilson’s current research focuses on

• How groundwater influences river flow volumes, temperature and water quality in mountain regions.
• How underground water systems are connected.
• How data collection and modeling are used to understand the impacts of management decisions on water distribution throughout the Great Salt Lake basin.

This research is especially important in the Western United States, where water-related challenges are particularly pressing.

“I look forward to working with the great staff and faculty at the Water Lab and across campus at such a critical time when water is at the forefront of our discussions,” Neilson said. “As water-related challenges grow increasingly important across Utah and the Western U.S., the Water Lab will collaborate with local and state partners to deliver timely, practical guidance and solutions.”

Neilson earned a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering in 2006, a master’s degree in the same field in 2001, and a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering in 1998 — all from USU’s College of Engineering.

She has authored 72 publications and delivered over 220 professional presentations. Neilson has received many awards throughout her distinguished career, including a prestigious award from the American Water Resources Association.

The Utah Water Research Laboratory is one of the first and largest university-based water research facilities in the United States. For over 60 years, it has been a national leader in water and environmental research and is widely recognized as one of the most respected facilities of its kind. The lab supports a community of 150 faculty, staff and students, with 49 funded graduate research assistantships and 180 active research projects.
