Veteran Utah State University track and field/cross country coach
Gregg Gensel was honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday (June 4) as he was named the Mountain Region Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year for 2007.
Gensel, who is completing his 26th year of coaching at Utah State, led the Aggie men to the 2007 Western Athletic Conference outdoor championship this spring in just their second year in the league. Gensel also led USU to league championships in men's and women's cross country last fall.
Gensel, who is in his 19th year as head coach of the men's track program and in his 14th year at the helm of the women's program, has led Utah State to 22 conference championships and has received Coach of the Year accolades 20 times, including three such awards this year as he was named the WAC's Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year last fall, along with being named the WAC's Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year this spring.
The USTFCCCA honored the top men's and women's athletes in track and field events and the top men's and women's coaches for the nine districts in Division I track and field.
Utah State will conclude its outdoor season this week as four student-athletes will be participating in the 2007 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 6-9.
