How Far They've Come: USU Moab Celebrates Latest ESL Grads

Utah State University Moab hosted a graduation ceremony July 14 for 19 students who successfully completed the campus’s six-week course for English as a second language.

During the ceremony, the students each shared a personal story about their journey. The stories were full of overcoming adversity, finding confidence, and bettering their circumstances. Leticia Bentley, one of the course’s instructors, said that watching the students realize how far they have come was inspiring.

“One student explained that for the first time he had enough confidence and vocabulary to pay his utility bills without asking for help,” she said. “Another shared how speaking more English at work allowed her to communicate with restaurant customers, resulting in better service and bigger tips. Several students talked about feeling confident enough to apply for better jobs and pursue new

opportunities.”

This particular cohort was unique because it included students with a wide range of English proficiency. While the course was split into two levels — beginning and advanced — it was still a challenge to tailor the courses so that all could learn at their own level and pace.

“Our goal was to make every student feel included and continue growing, regardless of their starting point,” Bentley said. “It required creativity, flexibility, and a great deal of teamwork from our volunteer tutors.”

The ESL course at USU Moab is an intensive six-week course held two days a week. The course is aided by volunteer tutors who work with students every week on their homework and to provide extra help when conflicts have prevented them from attending class.

The next ESL course will begin at the end of October.

“We hope to welcome both returning students and new learners who are ready to improve their English, expand their opportunities, and become even more connected to the Moab community,” Bentley said.
