Jaycee Carroll One of the Best Shooting Guards in the Nation

LOGAN, Utah — Nine games into the 2006-07 men's basketball season, Utah State's Jaycee Carroll is putting up unbelievable numbers that rank among the top players in the nation.

Carroll, a 6-2 junior guard from Evanston, Wyo., currently ranks first in the Western Athletic Conference and ninth in the nation in scoring at 22.7 points per game. He also ranks 22nd nationally in field goal percentage (.629), and 34th in free throw percentage (.895), both of which lead the WAC, and is second in the WAC and 33rd in the nation in three-point shooting at 47.1 percent.

 

Nationally, Carroll is the only player to rank among the top-35 in scoring, field goal shooting, three-point shooting, and free throw shooting, while only one player, Tajuan Porter of Oregon, ranks among the top-35 in the nation in three of those four statistical categories.

 

Carroll is also the top shooting guard in the nation statistically, as the 21 players ranked ahead of him in field goal percentage are listed as either forwards or centers.

 

Along with scoring nearly 23 points a game and shooting over 60 percent from the field, Carroll is also the most efficient player in the nation, among the top-20 scorers, as he is attempting just 12.89 shots per game and averaging 1.76 points per field goal attempt, both of which rank first in the nation. Brandon Ewing of Wyoming, who ranks seventh nationally in scoring at 23.1 points per game, is the second-most efficient player in the country, among the top-20 scorers, as he is attempting 14.22 shots per game and averaging 1.63 points per field goal attempt.

 

Overall, Carroll ranks 22nd in Utah State history in scoring with 1,195 career points, and is the school's all-time leader in three-point shooting at 46.3 percent.

 

All of this from a player who was offered a total of one Division I scholarships coming out of high school.
