Jazz Kicks: An Evening of Broadway Favorites in Jazz

By Ella Stott |

LOGAN, Utah — The Jazz Kicks Band will perform a night of Broadway music by Richard Rodgers and his collaborators, Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein. Jazz Kicks will take place Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the USU Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

This 17-piece ensemble, featuring accomplished musicians from Northern Utah, brings a big-band experience to audiences with its dynamic sound and rich repertoire.

“Richard Rodgers is one of the giants of American Musical Theatre,” said Band Director and Professor Emeritus Larry Smith. “He wrote so many good songs for his shows that it is difficult to choose which ones we should include. However, we’ve chosen songs I think you’ll enjoy.”

The Rodgers and Hart portion of the concert will feature songs such as “You Took Advantage of Me,” “Ten Cents a Dance,” “My Heart Stood Still” and “This Can’t be Love.”

The Rodgers and Hammerstein portion will include “Surrey With the Fringe on Top” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.”

Band members, including former students and colleagues of Smith, will be featured soloists throughout the concert.

“We’ll play jazzy instrumental versions of beloved songs from ‘Oklahoma!’ and ‘South Pacific,’ and a good time will be had by all,” Smith said. “We hope you’ll join us for an evening of Broadway favorites with a jazz attitude.”

Purchase tickets online or at the CCA Box Office located in the Chase Fine Arts Center. More information can be found on the calendar.
