Learning the Ropes

Utah State University's ropes course might sound like something rodeo related, but it's really designed to teach leadership, teamwork and communication skills in an outdoor setting.

The ropes course, located north of Canyon Road near First Dam in Logan, was built by Conference Services in conjunction with the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department in 1999, both as a training facility and an added attraction to Conference Services' programs.

This summer, USU Conference Services and the Outdoor Recreation Center formed a partnership to manage the ropes course.

"It's a good fit because the ORC manages outdoor activities and facilities and Conference Services manages conferences and events," said Dan Peterson, director of Conference Services. "I think cross promotion will be good for both of us. It also provides an opportunity to partner with local Cache Valley residents and the business community."

The 50-foot towers with a cargo net, platforms, rope swings and a tight rope might look daunting, but there are confidence-building activities for all ages and skill levels, said John Louviere, director of the Outdoor Recreation Center.

"The course is not exclusively designed for thrill seekers or extreme athletes," Louviere said. "There are 50 skill elements ranging from ground level to 50 feet in the air that can be tailored to individual needs and abilities.

"We have had it rented by 4-H clubs, a dental office, the Sports Academy, for family reunions and more. It's not all about danger or risk. The course also has activities that teach leadership, self-confidence, problem solving and communications skills."

The ropes course is available in half-day and full-day sessions. Price is based on the size of the group. For more information call the ORC at 435-797-3264 or visit its Web site.
