Utah State [University's] men's golf team will travel to Arroyo Grande, Calif., this week to compete in the eighth annual Cal Poly Men's Intercollegiate Tournament. The first two rounds will be played Thursday, March 26, and the final round will be Friday, March 27.
The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande. The 6,818-yard course is a par-72, and listed as one of Golf Digest's best places to play.
The 12-team field consists of Cal Poly, British Columbia, Brown, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Marcos, Cal State Stanislaus, DePaul, Golf Academy of Art, Sacramento State, Utah State and Utah Valley. Cal Poly is the two-time defending champion, shooting a seven-over par 871 last year and a two-over 866 in 2007.
Competing for the Aggies will be seniors
Devin Daniels,
Tyler Labrum and
Toph Peterson, junior
Thad Truman and sophomore
Tyson McFarland. In its last competition, Utah State finished in 15th-place at the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC Riverside in early March as McFarland was USU's top individual finisher with a 12-over 228 to tie for 47th.
At last year's Cal Poly Men's Intercollegiate, Daniels finished sixth individually with an even-par 216 (72-74-70) to lead Utah State to a fifth-place finish with a team score of 900 (298-304-298). Other Aggies to compete in last year's competition include Peterson who tied for 23rd with a 12-over 228 (77-76-75) and Labrum who tied for 42nd with a 16-over 232 (71-79-82).
Labrum currently leads the team with a stroke average of 75.53 in 17 rounds, while Daniels is a close second at 75.65.
