New Chairman for Board of Trustees

Richard L. Shipley was elected chairman of the Utah State University board of trustees in a meeting May 20. He replaces former Lt. Gov. Gayle McKeachnie.

 

L.J. Godfrey was re-elected as vice chair.

 

Quinn W. Millet was sworn in as a new member of the university's top governing board. He is the newly elected president of the Associated Students of Utah State University.

 

Shipley, resident of Farmington, Utah, and native of Preston, Idaho, said his issues of concern will center on university capital development, student enrollment, particularly in the southern Idaho and southwest Wyoming areas, and the quality of academic programs offered by USU.

 

McKeachnie, who has chaired the board since 2001, will step down as soon as a new trustee is appointed by Gov. Jon Huntsman some time this summer. McKeachnie has been a member of the board of trustees since August 1995.

 

Millet is automatically appointed as a trustee by virtue of his election as student body president. His term expires in one year.

 

Godfrey has been a member of the board since June 1999. He was re-appointed in 2003 until 2007.

 

Shipley has been a trustee member since July 2003. His appointment expires in June 2007.

 

Shipley is past president and chief executive officer of Shipley Associates, which he founded in 1972 as a national communication training firm. He has both a bachelor's and master's degree from USU, with graduate studies at the University of Utah and Harvard Graduate School of Business.

 

In 1992 he was named Utah's Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
