Parking Changes at USU

In an effort to simplify parking at Utah State University, the school has implemented a color-coded parking system to replace the letter-number system, USU director of parking and transportation Lisa Leishman said.

The new system was approved by the USU administration at the end of February.

Leishman said letters were sent to faculty and staff March 19 to inform them to change over to the color-coded system. The changes for commuter-student, residential and economy parking will take place over the summer.

“We want to simplify our parking system and improve customer service,” Leishman said. “Our former system of one letter and a number was confusing. It was difficult to explain and difficult for customers to understand. We wanted to simplify this.”

Leishman stressed the new system does not affect current campus parking assignments — it is simply an easier way to identify parking lots.

There are 13 different colors assigned to parking areas — eight for faculty and staff, two for students, one for students living on campus, one for state-owned vehicles and one for public pay parking.

Leishman said those eligible — contracted and benefited employees — will also be able to receive non-expiring permits.

She said USU patterned the new color-coded system after a similar one at Washington State University.

A change in residential parking will also take place over the summer. Students living in Merrill Hall and other buildings nearby have parked in other lots in the center of campus. However, the current parking lot on the south side of Highway 89 will be reconfigured to accommodate 60 residential slots.

Leishman said the gate currently on the west of that lot will be moved eastward to accommodate 60 additional resident stalls. Half the lot will still be available for commuter parking.
