Strickland Sets School Record Winning Steeplechase at Oregon Invitational

Utah State [University’s] men's and women's track and field teams combined for 35 total top five finishes, led by junior Steve Strickland's school-record setting 3,000m steeplechase victory Saturday [April 4, 2009] at the Oregon Pepsi Invitational at historic Hayward Field.

 
USU's women were third, while the men were fourth in the Aggies' first team scored meet of the outdoor season. Host Oregon won the women's team title with 233.50 points, while Indiana was second with 167 points, followed by Utah State in third with 132.50, while Kansas State was fourth with 119 points. On the men's side, Indiana was first with 200 points, while Oregon was second with 194 points and Kansas State was third with 130 point, just ahead of USU's 127 points.
 
The Aggie women had a total of 20 top-five finishes, while the men had 15.
 
Strckland won the steeplechase with a time of 8:49.53, bettering the previous USU record of 8:50.34 by Michael Kelly in 1998. Strickland's time was also an NCAA regional qualifying time.
 
The Aggies' other event winner was junior Ashlee Cannon, who won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.09, beating second-place Lyndsay Pearson of Oregon by almost .4 of a second (14.47).
 
Senior Nick Karren was second in the 400m hurdles (51.62), followed by classmate Keith Williams' fourth-place time of 54.07. Williams was also fourth in the 110m hurdles with a 14.73 time, while freshman Dylan Nielson was second with a 14.24.
 
Senior Brandon Waller was third in the 400m with a 49.53 time, while sophomore Chio Lopez was fourth in the 1500m with a 3:53.10 time. The USU 4x100m relay team of senior John Strang, Karren, sophomore Blake Bolen, and Nielson was third with a 41.78 time.
 
For the USU men field events, junior Tyler Ellis was second in the shot put (51-07.25, 15.73m) and fourth in the hammer (167-07, 51.08m). Ellis led a 2-3-4 USU finish in the shot put, followed by freshman Daniel Cruz with a 50-10.25 (15.50m) mark and freshman Bryce Hall with a 50-09 (15.47m). Hall was third in the discus with a 151-02 (46.07m), while Cruz was sixth in both the discus (149-08, 45.61m) and hammer (160-04, 48.87m).
 
For the Aggie women, Cannon (25.25) and freshman Katelyn Jensen (57.07) were both third in the 200m and 400m, respectively, while junior Erin Stattton (4:27.03) and senor Katie Thatcher (1:02.21) were both fourth in the 1500m and 400m hurdles, respectively.
 
The USU 4x100m relay team of Cannon, sophomore Maria Halton, sophomore Kimiko Kamo and senior Kaylene Gastaldi, was third with a 47.61 time, while the Aggies' 4x400m relay team of sophomore Heidi Hopkins, Thatcher, along with juniors Jennifer Day and Elaine Connolly, was fourth with a 3:50.22.
 
Freshman Spela Hus was second in the shot put with a 46-03.25 (14.10m) mark, while senior Krista Larson was second in the hammer with a 180-11 (55.14m) distance and fifth in the discus with a mark of 135-11 (41.44m), finishing just behind sophomore teammate Shannon Prince's fourth-place distance of 147-08 (45.02m).
 
The Aggies will continue action Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, in another split weekend with half the team at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Invitational and the other half of the team at the Weber State Invitational.
