Two USU Track & Field Athletes in Action at NCAA Championships This Weekend

Utah State [University] track and field will be represented by senior hurdler Nick Karren and junior high jumper Clint Silcock at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday-Saturday, June 9-12, at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., hosted by the University of Oregon.

Karren will be in action in the 400m hurdles semifinals Wednesday, June 9, starting at approximately 7:45 p.m. (MT). The 400m hurdles finals are Friday, June 11, at 6:05 p.m. (MT). Silcock will be competing in the high jump finals on Friday, June 11, starting at 4:30 p.m. (MT).

Silcock enters the National Championships ranked No. 2 in the country with a mark of 2.26m (7-05.00), Silcock's season and career-best height, set April 24 at the USU Faldmo Invitational and the second-best height in school history. Karren is No. 13 in the nation with a time of 50.35, set in winning the WAC Championship May 15 and is not only Karren's season and career-fastest time, but the fourth-fastest in USU history.

This will be Karren's second-straight trip to the National Championships and third of his career, also qualifying in 2007, and all three in the 400m hurdles. Silcock will be making his first appearance at the Outdoor National Championships, but he earned All-American honors in the high jump at the 2009 Indoor National Championships.

Karren advanced to Nationals with a time of 50.89, finishing as the 12th and final qualifier at the West Region Preliminary Round, just ahead of No. 13 finisher Adam Dailey of Nebraska's time of 50.90. Karren's time was also his third-fastest time this season.

Silcock was one of seven jumpers to clear 2.16m (7-01.00) at the West Region Preliminary Round, as they all qualified when they cleared that mark, with a jump off needed to determine the other five qualifiers to make up the 12 qualifiers to Nationals. The 2.16m jump is tied for Silcock's third-best mark this season.

USU is sending half of what it sent last year to the National Championships, as Karren was one of four Aggies in 2009. Utah State did not have any athletes qualify to the 2008 national meet after four in 2007 and a school-record eight athletes in 2006.
