USU Board of Trustees Thanks Diana Sabau for Years of Service
The following statement was released by the USU Board of Trustees regarding the departure of Diana Sabau as Vice President and Athletics Director.
To Our Fellow True Aggies:
The Utah State Board of Trustees wishes to extend its sincere and deep gratitude to Athletic Director Diana Sabau for her incredible service to Utah State University, our student-athletes and the USU community.
As a Board, we are deeply saddened by AD Sabau’s departure. We understand her decision and will continue cheering her on, but she will be missed.
Maryland is getting a true gem in Diana. In her two years at USU, AD Sabau “Met the Challenge.” She lifted Utah State Athletics in ways that exceeded our expectations, and all in spite of negative headwinds, significant challenges, and an ever-changing landscape.
Yes, AD Sabau has hired and retained fantastic coaches, led USU’s transition to the PAC-12 (which would not have happened without her), achieved historic fundraising milestones to support our programs and athletes, and oversaw championships winning teams. However, she accomplished so much more that the press hasn’t covered.
In her short time, Diana elevated USU’s horizons; she helped us see what is possible and moved us in that direction.
She focused on culture and worked to build a positive championship culture and also a culture of accountability. She helped our student-athletes achieve academically, prioritized their mental health and nutrition, improved our facilities while thoughtfully planning future enhancements, worked to connect the athletics department with the broader campus community, and she did this, and countless other things, all while balancing USU’s athletic department budget for the first time in many years.
Utah State Athletics will never be the same because Diana, building on Aggie tradition, changed the arc of USU Athletics by elevating our program and possibilities for even greater success. We are proud Diana Sabau chose to be an Aggie.
As a Board, on behalf of Aggie Nation, we are deeply committed to maintaining the vision and direction she inspired. We will not go backward. We will continue to Reach and Rise.
Go Aggies!
