USU Extension Releases New Book on Leadership

Three Utah State University Extension professionals recently released Leading with Understanding: The Power of Personality in Extension. The book offers research-based insights and strategies to improve collaboration and leadership through understanding personality dynamics.

One of three authors, Christina Pay, USU Extension assistant professor, said the book explores how personality impacts communication, team dynamics, decision-making and leadership styles, not only within Extension but in general leadership settings.

“The book can empower leaders to create stronger, more cohesive teams by leveraging individual strengths and fostering mutual understanding,” Pay said. “It includes personality assessments, case studies and actionable strategies to help professionals work more effectively with diverse individuals and teams. Great leadership begins with understanding ourselves and those we work with and leveraging everyone’s strengths.”

Co-author Jared Hawkins, USU Extension assistant professor, said the book is a reminder that each personality style has its strong points, and if we learn how to bring everyone’s strengths to the table, we can find productive synergy.

“Because I’m an introvert, I usually prefer to work on my part of a project by myself,” he said. “Researching for the book has helped me realize that others may prefer to work together more closely, such as brainstorming ideas or helping each other with contributions. I’m now more sensitive to the working styles of my colleagues, and it has helped me become more adaptable in my work.”

Co-author Sadie Wilde, USU Extension assistant professor, said the book is a valuable resource for those who want to build stronger relationships in the workplace and empower their team.

“Through the process of writing this book, I realized how often we assume others think and work the way we do,” she said. “But great leadership — and friendship — come from understanding different perspectives.”

Pay said both introverts and extroverts can gain valuable insights from this book and learn more about themselves and others.
