USU Leads WAC with 42 Fall Semester Academic All-Conference Selections
For the second year in a row, Utah State University led the Fall Academic all-Western Athletic Conference selections with 42 student-athletes. The selections were announced by the conference office Friday, Jan. 25.
Utah State’s 42 honorees topped Hawai’i and Boise State’s 34 each, while Idaho had 28 selections. Last year USU also had 42 fall academic selections to lead the league.
Among USU’s 42 honorees were 13 soccer players and 13 football players. Women’s cross country had seven selections, volleyball had five selections, while men’s cross country had four players honored.
A total of 10 USU student-athletes were recognized for their academic success as well as athletic all-conference selections earlier this fall. That group includes men’s cross country runners Jared Glenn and Steven Strickland, women’s runners Amy Egan and Stacie (Lifferth) Dorius, football player Jake Hutton, soccer players Candice Clark, Abby Hunt and Lindsey Smart, along with volleyball players Amanda Nielson and Melissa Osterloh.
Egan, a senior majoring in English, and Dorius, a senior majoring in speech language pathology, were on both lists last year as well.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
A total of 262 student-athletes were named to the all-WAC list for this fall.
Last fall, Utah State’s 42 honorees were five more than Boise State, which produced 37 award winners. Fresno State was third with 32 selections, while San Jose State was fourth with 26 picks.
In the fall of 2006, USU’s first year in the WAC, the Aggies were third in the WAC with 35 honorees and trailed Fresno State, which had 37 picks and Boise State, which finished with 36 honorees.
