LOGAN — Utah State University's Wassermann Piano Series will welcome internationally acclaimed pianist Youl Sun for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.
Youl Sun rose to international prominence after earning a rare sweep of top honors at the 2024 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, winning the Gold Medal, Audience Choice Prize, and Student Jury Prize. He has since added major international accolades, including first prize at the 2024 Seoul International Music Competition. His Wassermann Piano Series recital will feature works by Gabriela Lena Frank, Texu Kim, Claude Debussy, and Franz Liszt, including “12 Transcendental Études.”
Established to bring internationally recognized artists to USU while enriching music education across campus and the region, the Wassermann Piano Series combines public performances with educational opportunities for students. In addition to his Nov. 3 recital, Youl Sun will present a public masterclass on Nov. 2.
A cornerstone of professional music training, masterclasses provide emerging musicians with insight into interpretation, technique, practice strategies, and artistic decision-making. For USU students and emerging pianists in the state, the opportunity to learn from a prestigious performer offers exposure to the standards and expectations of the international concert stage.
“Youl Sun is one of the most compelling young pianists performing today. His combination of technical command, imagination, and musical maturity is extraordinary,” said series director Associate Professor Cahill Smith. “We are thrilled to welcome an artist of this caliber to Utah State University, where audiences can enjoy a world-class performance and students can learn directly from a musician performing at the highest levels of the profession.”
Discounted admission is available for youth and college students, and a limited number of free tickets are available for College of Arts and Sciences students with valid ID. Eligible students should contact the Fine Arts Box Office in advance at 435-797-8022.
