USU Researchers Come Up With Method to Mimic Heart Tissue With the Help of Hagfish

Video by Taylor Emerson, Digital Journalist, University Marketing & Communications

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Utah, according to CDC data from 2022 — though we’re certainly not alone. The No. 1 cause of mortality in the U.S. is just the same, with heart disease outpacing cancer by nearly 100,000 more deaths.

To help aid in finding solutions for one specific heart condition — diabetic cardiomyopathy — a USU student has helped research a method to more efficiently study it with the help of a very unique fish.

In this video learn about that method, how it works, and what could result from it.
