Following a wildfire this summer, Utah State University is working to restore the burned hillside near its Logan campus below U.S. Highway 89.
The immediate work is focused on stabilizing the burned ground, managing runoff, reducing sediment movement, and starting to re-establish vegetation in the burned area near USU’s Logan campus.
Some lane closures will be needed to allow for the hydromulching from Oct. 26-30, including closure of the right eastbound travel lane along Highway 89 from 1200 East to approximately 1500 East. Some USU parking in the lot just south of Highway 89 near 1200 East will also be reduced during this period.
People traveling near the area may notice several different treatments being implemented on the hillside, including fire-killed trees placed along the contours, straw wattles, sediment fencing, hydromulch, and some new plantings. These measures are designed to work together, with different treatments addressing different conditions across the hillside.
The work is the first step in a longer-term stabilization effort. Additional evaluation will address deeper-rooted vegetation, slope stability, and future maintenance and mitigation needs.
