Utah State and BYU Sign Deal to Renew Football Rivalry

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University athletics director Randy Spetman and BYU athletics director Tom Holmoe have announced BYU and Utah State will resume the in-state football rivalry, beginning in 2008. The two teams are scheduled to meet each season through 2012.

 

"This is a great rivalry that we are excited to continue," Spetman said. "We appreciate BYU working with us."

 

The 2008 meeting will be played in Logan, followed by the 2009 contest in Provo. Utah State will host the 2010 matchup, while BYU will play host to the Aggies in both 2011 and 2012.

 

"This is one of BYU's oldest and most highly contested rivalries," Holmoe said. "We're looking forward to renewing the annual contest between the two schools. While I believe renewing this rivalry is good for both schools, I also believe it is good for college football in the state of Utah."

 

The two teams have met a total of 77 times since the 1922 season with BYU holding a 41-33-3 advantage in the 85-year-old rivalry. With the exception of a thrilling 58-56 Utah State victory in Logan in 1993, the Cougars have won 17 of the past 18 meetings. Prior to the 1983 season, however, Utah State held a 32-26 advantage in the series, dating back to 1922.

 

Each team holds a winning record on its home turf with Utah State owning an 18-14-2 record in Logan and the Cougars posting a 26-15-1 record in Provo.
