Freshman Gymnast Alex Martin was named Western Gymnastics Conference Gymnast of the Week as it was announced Wednesday (Feb. 11). The award is voted on by a media panel throughout the Western Gymnastics Conference.
Martin, a freshman from Longmont, Colo., led Utah State to a 196.000 to 195.700 victory over Southern Utah last Friday (Feb. 6). Martin adds this honor to being named Coca-Cola Gymnast of the Meet against Southern Utah and Utah State University Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 9-16.
Martin set four career bests as she won the all-around (39.350) and bars (9.925), with the fifth-best score in school history. She also set bests on the beam (9.850) and floor (9.900).
Martin has competed in the all-around in three of Utah State's first four meets. She did not compete on the beam at Boise State on Jan. 30. Martin is the first Utah State gymnast to win the award this year and is the first to be honored since Nicole Kilpatrick won last year for the week of March 11-17.
The Aggies travel to Provo, Utah, on Friday, Feb. 13, to face Brigham Young at 7 p.m. The meet will be televised on KBYU.
