Utah State Gymnastics Promotes Nilson to Full-Time Coach
Utah State [University] gymnastics head coach Jeff Richards announced Friday [July 30] that Josh Nilson has been promoted from student assistant to full-time assistant coach.
Nilson, a Logan, Utah, native, has spent the last two years as student assistant coach and five years with the Aggie gymnastics program after being a volunteer student-assistant for the previous three seasons. Nilson serves as the Aggies’ bars coach as well as helping out on the other apparatuses.
“I am excited to have Josh finally join us in a full-time capacity after serving as a student assistant the last few years,” Richards said. “The background knowledge he has of the program and the community makes him a great asset to the program.”
Prior to being a full-time assistant, Nilson was a spotter and helper for the Aggie gymnastics team the past three years. He also coached at Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club for three years after coaching with the USU Tytans gymnastics program for the previous three years. Nilson competed as a Level 10 gymnast for the previous two years.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to work full-time with the Utah State gymnastics program and help promote the program, this wonderful university and community,” Nilson said.
Nilson earned his bachelor’s degree in law and constitutional studies with a minor in family science in May, 2010. He is the younger brother of former USU assistant gymnastics coach Ben Nilson, who coached the Aggies from 2003-07.
Nilson is married to former USU gymnast Amanda Corn, and is the father of Tristan Nilson.
Utah State ended team competition at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Fullerton, Calif., placing third and matching the Aggies’ best WAC finish ever, equaling the third-place finish in 2007. USU was ranked No. 54 in the final regular-season team rankings and only the top 36 teams advanced to the NCAA Regionals. This was the third year in a row and fourth in last five that USU did not qualify for regionals as a team, but the Aggies have sent at least three individuals in each of the last three years.
