Utah State University Caine Ensembles Present Chamber Music Concert

By Hannah Castro |

LOGAN, Utah — The Caine College of the Arts Department of Music presents Caine Ensembles, an evening concert showcasing music students in small chamber groups. The concert will feature a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

This year, Assistant Professor of Horn Joel Ockerman was asked to help organize this event for the first time. In doing so, he collaborated closely with students and faculty to build the music selections.

“Each ensemble has selected its own repertoire with guidance from faculty members,” Ockerman said. “It’s exciting to see these students make the music their own. The communication and teamwork required is remarkable.”

Ockerman emphasized the personal touch that smaller ensembles bring to a performance.

“It’s exciting in a different way, hearing these smaller ensembles play, because when the woodwind five players are on stage, it involves trying to fill up this big space with only five instruments. It sounds more intimate,” Ockerman said.

The chamber setting allows each musician to be distinctly heard, even within the ensemble.

“You really hear each player individually. I hear the French horn section in a chamber ensemble. I hear the person on horn, the woodwind player, I hear the stringed instrument etc.,” Ockerman said. “It really gives each player a way to express themselves soloistically, but in this smaller setting.”

This event is free and open to the public. For more ticket information please visit online.
