Volleyball Standout Zuzana Cernianska Named First USU Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Volleyball player Zuzana Cernianska was named the inaugural 2005-06 Utah State athlete of the week for the period ending August 28, it was announced on Wednesday. This week's award was selected by the USU Athletic Media Relations office.

 

Cernianska led the Aggie volleyball team to a 4-0 start on the season as USU swept its opponents at the Tulsa Hurricane Invitational last weekend. She was named to the all-tournament team and no MVP was selected.

 

The senior opposite side hitter from Prague, Czech Republic, hit .276 and averaged 5.92 kills, 2.85 digs, 0.46 blocks and 0.38 service aces per game. She recorded at least 20 kills in three of the four matches, including 28 against Lamar. In the championship game against Tulsa, she posted 27 kills and 12 digs.

 

The Aggies defeated Fordham, Lamar, Texas-Pan American and Tulsa in the tournament.

 

Cernianska was named a preseason all-WAC selection after earning first-team all-Big West Conference honors the past two seasons. She enters her final season at USU ranking second all time in school history in attempts, third in service aces, fourth in kills, seventh in digs, eighth in hitting percentage and 10th in assists.

 

The Aggies continue their season traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., to play in a tournament on Friday and Saturday [Sept 2-3].

Soccer - Sophomore Dana Peart scored both of USU's goals last week as the Aggies started the season 0-1-1. Peart's two goals equal her season goal total from last year. She scored her first goal in USU's 2-1 loss to Gonzaga last Friday as she connected on a Rachelle Dixon free kick. Her second goal came off of a play created by Charity Weston and Candice Clark as the Aggies tied Southern Utah, 1-1, last Sunday. Peart now has four career goals to go along with two assists. Her 10 career points are third among active USU players.
