Overview

Every year, USU’s University Marketing & Communications department hosts the “Brick by Brick” event, inviting every member of Aggie Nation (students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, etc.) to bring their families and participate in a night of LEGO building. Whether it’s a pre-built showcase put on display to be judged or if it’s one of the 10-minute challenge builds, families are exposed to USU culture and the Aggie spirit by engaging with one another and competing for prizes.

Initially designed to bring students and the community together through creative brick building, the Brick by Brick event has grown to also draw in prospective students and show off innovative projects being developed across the university. This allows families and their children to learn more about what makes USU culture so special and what makes the university such a fun place to learn through creativity.

Description

Do you have what it takes to build Utah State brick by brick? Every year, families in the community are encouraged to participate in brick-building challenges and showcases to engage with others over USU’s culture. Builds are themed around popular university locations, events, and icons, introducing the Aggie spirit to prospective students and changing the way current students and alumni view things they see on a daily basis.

By breaking down already-existing aspects of the university and allowing the community to rebuild them “brick by brick,” families can let their creative imagination flow all while appreciating the history of what makes Utah State a special place in the community.

The Strategic Challenge

Not only is Brick by Brick just a “fun evening with the kids," but it’s an outlet for families to share their creativity and love of the USU brand by:

  • Creating USU-themed builds, allowing the builder to learn more about a specific location, event, or icon.
  • Engage with others in the community.
  • Walk away with a deeper love for the university.

The Strategy in Action

Community and University Engagement

At the event, community members are encouraged to make new friends and interact with others in attendance. Not only that, but the event serves as an outlet to promote other things going on at the university, i.e., USU’s Roblox project, informing prospective students about colleges and programs, and prizes that allow families to engage with athletic or arts programs.

Creating Future Aggies

At the end of the day, this event is aimed toward a younger audience. Everybody enjoys LEGO to a certain extent, but children are ultimately the ones who play and interact with bricks the most. This event is meant to be fun and inviting, showing younger generations that higher education is more than just studying and getting good grades. It’s about community, opportunity, and creativity, and the ultimate goal of this event is to create future Aggies who can look back fondly at this event, whether it was their first exposure to the university or something that grew their love for its culture.
