During January and February, Manti High School GEAR UP students had multiple opportunities to learn hands-on skills, the practical application of political studies, and recieve help preparing for college. From FAFSA night and Pathways Day, to tours of the Utah State Capital; Manti GEAR UP students have learned and shared quite a large amount!

On January 18, 2024, about 65 seniors and their parents attended the annual FAFSA Night at Manti High School. Several staff members from the Snow College Financial Aid office were eager to help students and parents fill out the FAFSA. Some attendees had been worried that recent changes to the FAFSA would make the process difficult, but the night ran smoothly thanks to the experience of the Snow College Finacial Aid office. Students who attended were additionally entered into a drawing for a scholarship from the MHS Counseling Department. The turnout for FAFSA Night was excellent!

On January 25th, 2024, 18 seniors from Manti High School participated in the annual Pathways Day at Ephraim Elementary and Manti Elementary. The seniors (along with other students at Manti High School) had the chance to teach 150 4th graders a variety of hands-on activities. These activities included: circuits, marketing, broadcasting, food webs, flying drones, driving robots, and learning about seeds/natural resources. Manti High School student body officers acted as group leaders for the 4th grade students, and made a large difference with the flow of the event. This was a great leadership experience for all, and we are hopeful that this event will continue for years to come.

On February 5, 2024, 16 seniors had the opportunity to tour the Utah State Capitol. The tour was led by a graduated Manti High School GEAR UP student, who now works as an intern. The students were also taught by Steve Lund, a local representative. While the representatives were in session, the Manti High School students were present in the gallery above. Representative Lund introduced the students, and the representatives in session gave them a round of applause. The students loved hearing about bills concerning refugees, the Heber Valley Railroad, and the State Fairgrounds. This was a great day, and many students interested in politics had the opportunity to learn more about the political process, as well as what is required to become an intern during the legislative session. One student, who loves political science, said that she would love to become an intern in a few years, and is so excited to get involved with the political process!
