| Description |
Bulk tank milk culturing provides information on the presence or absence of mastitis pathogens and quantitation of predominant bacterial groups pertaining to raw milk quality in categories of coliforms, environmental bacteria, agents of contagious mastitis ( Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae ), and standard plate count. |
| Sampling Requirements |
Samples taken over consecutive days or weeks are most diagnostically useful for interpretation of results. The bulk tank should be agitated before sample collection, collected from the top of the bulk tank with a sterile syringe and placed into a sterile, leak proof container. Samples must be refrigerated and shipped immediately with an ice pack. If the sample cannot be shipped immediately the bulk tank milk should be frozen. Multiple bulk tank milk collections can be submitted and pooled upon request. |
