Brucella abortus/suis buffered acidified plate antigen (BAPA)

Name Brucella abortus BAPA
Description Detection of antibodies to Brucella abortus/suis, the causative agents of brucellosis, using buffered acidified plate antigen (BAPA).
Section Serology
Specimen 2 ml serum
Sampling Requirements Collect serum from clotted blood in a non-additive tube (e.g., plain red top or serum separator). When possible, transfer clear serum off the clot into a new tube. Plasma or excessively hemolyzed samples are unacceptable.
Collection Container Anticoagulant-free glass or plastic tubes
Packing Instructions

Label all tubes with unique identifiers.  Place tubes in numerical order in boxes designed to hold tubes.  Do not submit large numbers of tubes loose in bags.  Include a list of sample numbers or e-mail an Excel spreadsheet with numbers to the laboratory (UVDL@usu.edu). Use cold packs during hot weather, especially if shipping serum samples on the clot. Overnight shipping recommended.

Special Instructions The UVDL screens bovine and swine samples for brucellosis using the BAPA test unless specific export, sale, or entry requirements are indicated, in which case the submitting veterinarian should specify which tests are needed. Due to USDA's Brucellosis Eradication Uniform Methods and Rules, samples must be accompanied by either VS Form 4-33 or a VS Form 4-54, as appropriate.
