Brucella abortus/suis Rivanol precipitation – plate agglutination test

Name Brucella abortus rivanol
Description Detection of antibodies to Brucella abortus/suis, the causative agents of brucellosis, by agglutination following removal of non-specific but potentially cross-reactive serum proteins by rivanol (ethacridine lactate) precipitation.
Section Serology
Specimen 1 ml serum
Sampling Requirements Collect serum from clotted blood in a non-additive tube (e.g., plain red top or serum separator). When possible, transfer clear serum off the clot into a new tube. Plasma or excessively hemolyzed samples are unacceptable.
Collection Container Anticoagulant-free glass or plastic tubes
Packing Instructions Label all tubes with unique identifiers.  Keep samples cold. Overnight shipping recommended.
Special Instructions This test is used primarily as a follow-up test for samples which test indeterminate or detected by another screening method (e.g., BAPA). The UVDL screens all bovine and swine samples using the BAPA test unless specific export, sale, or entry requirements are indicated, in which the submitting veterinarian should specify which tests are needed.  Due to USDA's Brucellosis Eradication Uniform Methods and Rules, samples must be accompanied by either VS Form 4-33 or a VS Form 4-54, as appropriate.
