Fasting recommended. Avoid hemolysis. Samples should be less than 24 hours old. Refrigerate after collection. Whole blood submitted before weekends/holidays will have impacted results due to shipping and business hours. EDTA purple-top tube/lavender-top tube preferred except for ravens, crows and robins; Fresh heparin green-top tube for excepted species . Citrate/blue-top tube for ostriches. Clotted samples rejected. Protect from temperature extremes. Morphology subject to deterioration after 8 hours without fresh smear, sooner in heparin. NOTE: reference intervals are not available. |
