February 2026 Newsletter
February Newsletter for the Utah Women & Leadership Project at Utah State University.
Colleagues,
I have a number of Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) announcements for May:
First, we are pleased to announce the release of a new research and policy brief titled “The Impact of COVID-19 on Utah Women and Work: Career Advancement Challenges.” Thanks to my co-researcher Marin Christensen (Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute) for her fabulous work on this brief. This brief is the second in a series of related reports being released in 2021 and is the first to analyze the extensive qualitative data collected.
Second, we released a new research brief a few weeks ago titled “The Status of Women Leaders in Utah Higher Education: A 2021 Update.” Thanks to Drs. Nancy E. Hauck, Jessica C. Hill, and April Townsend who were researchers and co-authors on this study. Initial reports on this topic were released in 2014 and 2017. Progress has been made, but there is still work to do.
Third, we have a new “What Can I Do?” idea sheet titled “What City Council Members Can Do to Strengthen the Impact of Utah Girls and Women.” Thanks to community volunteers Staci Liljegren and Diane Rindlisbacher for their contributions and co-authorship and for the 28 city council members who joined brainstorming meetings. Local elected officials can play an important and influential role in strengthening the impact of girls and women in their communities.
Fourth, we have released a new event video titled “Rising Athenas, Male Allies, and the Power of Gender Partnership.” Drs. David Smith and Brad Johnson, authors of the Harvard Business Review books Athena Rising and Good Guys, make the business case for male engagement in gender equality, showing why men are often absent from gender equity work and why genuine equity is good for both men and women. They provide the “how to” for men, women, and organizational leaders who want to be intentional and inclusive allies, leveraging mentorship, sponsorship, and workplace partnership to create a more diverse workforce. Thanks to the Huntsman School of Business, the Utah Education Network, and Utah Public Radio for sponsoring this event.
Fifth, here are some of our partners’ upcoming events:
Sixth, the Women’s Business Center of Utah (one of our partners) recently launched UtahWomenOwned.com, the public directory of women-owned businesses. The Utah Women-Owned Business Directory can be used to support female entrepreneurs and local businesses. This is an exciting resource!
