Women Leading Behind the Walls: Leadership in Utah’s Correctional Facilities

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Join us for a compelling women’s leadership webinar featuring Dr. Susan R. Madsen in conversation with Sharon D’Amico and Bisera Habibija, two wardens leading correctional facilities in Utah. This dialogue will explore the unique pathways that drew them into leadership, the challenges they face in navigating complex correctional environments, and the opportunities they see for innovation, equity, and impact within the system.

As women in a traditionally male-dominated field, D’Amico and Habibija bring powerful insights into resilience, collaboration, and the importance of fostering safe, rehabilitative spaces for both staff and incarcerated individuals. Dr. Madsen will guide the discussion to highlight lessons learned, strategies for effective leadership, and the broader implications for advancing women’s leadership across sectors. Whether you are an advocate, educator, student, or professional, this webinar offers a rare opportunity to hear firsthand experiences from women shaping correctional leadership in Utah. Don’t miss this inspiring conversation on courage, vision, and the future of women leading in corrections.

Leadership in Times of Grief & Crisis: Insights from President Astrid S. Tuminez

Panel Discussion/Presentation

For the seventh webinar in this series, Dr. Susan R. Madsen will moderate a powerful conversation with Dr. Astrid S. Tuminez, the seventh president of Utah Valley University. President Tuminez has faced profound challenges in 2025, including the loss of her husband earlier this year and the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk that occurred on her own campus. Yet resilience has defined her journey from the very beginning—growing up in an impoverished farming community and the slums of a major city in the Philippines.

This webinar will explore what it means to lead through grief and crisis, while also examining the complexities of guiding a large institution of higher education in uncertain times. President Tuminez will share leadership lessons she has learned throughout her career, as well as the unique challenges and opportunities she has encountered as both a woman and a woman of color.

Join us for this timely and inspiring discussion on women in leadership, with a special focus on navigating loss, crisis, and the demands of leadership with courage and compassion.
